Just saw Bladerunner 2049 - the original is one of my favourite films ever - but this sequel is truly dire. It felt like it was about 8 hours long. I was so bored I actually left the cinema for a bit just to stretch my legs and have a break and was shocked that it was only an hour into it at that point, I really thought I had been sat there about 3 hours by then! Dire, utterly dire.

Thank God it's not only me, I was so bored I fell asleep through most of it. Harrison Ford added close to nothing yet I was shot down for being small minded and a simpleton.

Hi ed01

I'm rather like yourself in holding the original in high regard. I'll generally say it is my favourite film but there are so many to be fair.

I went to this and couldn't help having certain expectations and came away disappointed for the most part. I have liked all of Villeneuve's other films and felt certain that Blade Runner was in safe hands with him.

So i thought about it for a couple of days and i wondered why i didn't feel like i loved this one and why i do love the original. The visuals and the music as well as the performances make that a special film. I think this film has two of those things but the Vangelis score in the original is like another amazing character to enjoy in almost every scene. The new one just doesn't have that, in fact it seems to have quite a lot of industrial screeches and groans as score which bothered me a bit.

Anyway, i went back a second time yesterday. Honestly, i enjoyed it more on that occasion simply because i wasn't holding it next to the original in the same way and i could take in the story a little better.

It is an absolute spectacle of a film, i mean it's gorgeous to look at albeit you have to look at it for quite a long time! No doubt it's too long and some of the plot seems a bit confused and over-elaborate but i'm glad i went back and just saw something i enjoyed for itself, rather than just think of it as a disappointing follow-up.

The end of the film makes their plan clear however, and that bothers me! Anyway, sorry for the long post. I enjoyed thinking about this one and revisiting Ridley Scott's masterpiece.

{Ed001's Note - interesting it is better on 2nd viewing, that is something I will never find out because there is no way I would sit through that again!}

*Spoilers*

Just saw it and I'm surprised people don't like it here. Although it is not as good as the original, the sequel was still really great. Visuals were fantastic, characters were engrossing and it felt like a sequel which grew upon the original rather than one which retroactively messes up the continuity or plots. The actors also did a superb job. Gosling, in particular, does really well in portraying K's tragic arc. For me, the movie honestly didn't feel that long, which is surprising because I've always felt like the original Blade Runner had a really slow pace.

However, there were some flaws which irked me. Some of the plot points were not explored and it meant that it felt a bit off kilter and forced in to move the story on. The main problem was the score though. It felt too much like a typical Zimmer score with a few riffs thrown in from the original Vangelis score which is far, far superior. The original soundtrack was never bombastic, and does a really great job in elevating the atmosphere. Here, Zimmer's score is never subtle enough (apart from when K dies) and it just did not feel like a Blade Runner score.

But other than that, I really enjoyed the film. The ending, in particular, was superb, with K dying in the snow to the same music that Batty died to in the original as the highlight for me. I would rate it 8.5/10.
