So I got round to watching rise of Sky Walker, I had heard mainly bad things so didn’t rush to watch it.

If you judge it as just another movie then it is ok but as a Star Wars movie I have a few issues.

If you haven’t watched it yet stop reading.

Healing? What? Why? How? Where has this been for the whole Star Wars story?

Palpatine? The great emperor but is just shoe horned in then killed by a second lightsaber?

The kiss? Absolutely not needed and characters can be great without a love interest.

Her declaration as a skywalker, why? It’s meant to be the end of the saga but they have left a thread to continue if the money dries up.

The whole passing things through the force? Again why and where has it been?

So many scenes were rehashed from elsewhere, or felt that way.

And it felt like it was made by someone who has never watched Star Wars and just imagined what the force could do.

And finally I read other reviews complaining about Rey and how she is a Mary Sue. This just sounds like a bunch of boys whinging because women are finally being represented in there boys toy. I think her and Finn were the good parts from the film. Ren was massively underused in my opinion.

However Taika Waititi is in to direct the next one in the series, can’t wait for that and see how they build a story away from skywalker.

Taika Waititi for Star Wars? Wow. Then I might finally enjoy the next Star Wars then. He surprised me with Thor 3. Thor 1 and 2 were kind of serious, and at first I doubted him in Thor 3. But he made it so full of fun and extremely enjoying to watch. He nailed it.

I love Taika Watiti, brilliant fella as well as a great director. Can do comedy action superbly well. One of the best around imo.

I am surprised by Wyred's review of Star Wars, I had to watch it to see what he was on about and I think it just shows he is not the hugest Star Wars fan (like our very own Ed007 for example). Healing has always been in Star Wars, Anakin Skywalker was looking to learn it to save his mother, for example. It was a big part of the Knights of the Old Republic game (which friends of mine say is the best RPG game ever made though I have never played it myself) with healers such as Jolee Bindo and Visas Marr a huge part of Star Wars 'lore'.

It is not done by someone who has no idea about Star Wars, quite the opposite. They have included things clearly to appease the obsessive fans at the expense of building the narrative around the characters. After the racist backlash they had aimed at Rose Tico, I think they just wanted to get all the knobhead fans onside by including as many nods to Star Wars lore as they could.

And for me it doesn't really work because of it. Much as I love that kind of thing, and grew up reading the comics and books so love Star Wars, I would rather they did it well, as Mando did in the series. They didn't and it ended up with a film that rushed through too many storylines to tie it all up and then dallied on a boring, needless ending that dragged on.

Taika is now a director where I will just watch the movie even if I know little about it as I know it will be good. jojo rabbit is another great one to watch if you haven’t seen it.

Ed I’ll be honest I have only ever watched the movies, and I got into them fairly late too. so never got into the wider universe of Star Wars so maybe my review was a bit skewed.

But it does seem like we got to the same answer for the movie, no big pay off after three films and not helped by there not being a coherent story for the three films. And as you say so little character development across the trilogy and they had potential to be great characters.

{Ed001's Note - they have made a mess of every film since the original trilogy to be honest, apart from Rogue One. I have faith in Taika to change that and make them good again.}

Yeah ed001 rouge one is my personal favourite and was hoping the other disney/star wars products would head in a similar direction.
Also I have been re-watching all 9 of the movies and got to ROTJ last night, what's your opinion on the remastered edit? Seems like Lucas got a trigger finger and changed things for the sake of it and adding the 'new anakin' to the ghost scene makes little sense to me.

{Ed001's Note - I am not keen on the remastering. They were fine as they were and it just felt like change for the sake of it. Unless something adds to the story, I just don't see the point of changing it and none of the changes added to the story.}
