Hi guys

Just curious to see if anyone has opinions on "Dunkirk" yet. I went to it yesterday with fairly high expectations. Mostly because i know a Nolan film is going to look brilliant if nothing else and i'd heard plenty of hype.

I found it a letdown honestly. It was fantastic to look at and that's mostly where it ended for me. Its structure is maybe where i struggled in that basically there's no narrative, only the event itself seen from 3 different perspectives. The characters had little depth for me.

I've no doubt that it is that way for a reason but it just didn't work for me as a film should. Anyway, just a few thoughts.

{Ed001's Note - interesting review that, I was tempted to go and see it but I might wait until it hits TV now.}

Believe it or not, he's actually pretty good in the film. Certainly not a hindrance anyway! And ed, probably best to see it big screen if at all. Not really a big war film fan so maybe it's just not for me.

{Ed001's Note - I could just sit really close to the TV?}

Haha. Yeah. Like those kids.

{Ed001's Note - I was one of those kids when I was young. Before you say it, yes it was a long time ago!}

I think Nolan has done a great job with Dunkirk. The film conveys the relentless bomardment those guys endured incredibly well. I found it tiresome watching. It was a bombardment on the viewers sense's. The music score was gritty and draining. It was never ending. Again trying to convey that message of ceaseless bombardment. Visually the film was stunning. Some scenes were just incredible, especially in the air. Historically the film wasn't too bad either and was pritty accurate.

On the whole I think it's a fantastic film which does the men of Dunkirk justice. It doesn't let up and it try's to put you on that beach with them. What I liked most was the sense of foreboding of what was to come next which historically is spot on. The war for us had just begun. I'd definitely recommend the film but as with all Nolan works don't expect the norm.
