Ocean's 11 now that's a modern classic. Great film, good story, good cast. Only bad point is Julia Robert not really a fan but not sure who could have replaced her. Shame they mucked it up with the sequels.

13 was on last night, not a bad film but tries to be too clever.

Much better than 12 though. 12 is total garbage.

Ok. Old films that should get a remake, The Hidden and the Rowdy Roddy Piper classic They Live. Both excellent and both due a re-vamp.

FTE {Ed001's Note - I loved that film! They Live I mean. I fully agree they should redo it.}

Why redo films i don't get it, they are classics for a reason, leave them alone. {ed001's note - because they may be classics, but some films are cult classics, they are loved for what they tried to do, rather than what they actually achieved. they live, for instance, had terrible acting and effects, redone with decent acting and effects, it would be so much better.}

The only thing they couldn't do Ed is make THAT fight scene any better. Still one of my all time favourites.

FTE {Ed001's Note - not sure about that, get Tony Jaa in!}

And possibly Jackie Chan when he was in his prime. Circa Armour of God or Meals on Wheels.

FTE {Ed001's Note - Wheels on Meals is a classic movie, him, Yuen Baio and Sammo Hung are brilliant together.}

They should remake harry potter. good storyline rubbish actors.

Krull? .

A decent Guyver film should be made

IT and gremlins lol

Wheels on meals! Well spotted Ed, did you ever see a film called Police Assassin's with Cynthia Rothrock and possibly Michele Yeoh, excellent fight scenes.
If your going to remake Stephen King films then I'd like to see Salems Lot get the treatment without Rob Lowe obviously. {Ed001's Note - it rings a bell, did it have Rothrock fighting with a chain?}

Can't say for sure Ed. The only thing I remember was thinking that this was quite good for Rothrock as opposed to the usual garbage she was in.

FTE {Ed001's Note - she couldn't act well enough to get decent parts, unfortunately. It is a shame, she had looks and talent in martial arts, but her acting was abysmal. Though a lot of that is down to working in Chinese cinema, they like a different style of acting, with over expressive facial work, which doesn't go down well in the west.}

Hollywood tends to remake films it knows it can make money off, rather than films that need it. Its easier to take a well known film that's a classic or cult classic and remake it as they know fans of the original will go to see it purely out of curiousity. Something like Total Recall for example. Original is a classic possibly Arnold's best film, didn't need a remake yet the suits knew it would pull fans in to see it. And its sheep. But its easier to do than to take a film that's a classic but didn't do well at the time and is perceived as a flop as it has a certain stigma about it so Hollywood won't touch it no matter how deserving as they worry it won't do well commercially. You'll notice that they tend to remake only films from a certain period usually 70's to 80's although sometimes they do the odd older film from 50's to 60's. Yet they wouldn't touch something like Gone With The Wind for example which probably could do with a modern version.

What happened to the new ghostbusters film that was supposedly going to be made? {ed001's note - last i heard shooting was to begin this year and that they finally got bill murray to agree to be in it too.}

03 Mar 2013 13:35:50
This is what I mean. I like the ghostbusters films but this new film is a bit pointless. Its just to make money as they know fans will go see it. Its been thirty years their all a bit long in the tooth now.

I think they are attempting a semi reboot with a handing over of the business to a new generation. Ghostbusters tng lol!

Ed's any chance of the alternative reply button on the movie page? Cheers. MrE {Ed001's Note - I will mention it to Ed033.}

26 Feb 2013 18:08:15
thanks eds, have an old rubbish phone so couldn't use the proper reply. MrE {Ed001's Note - no worries, glad to help.}

I went to see Wreck It Ralph the other day, I though it was a decent film, nothing special, has anyone else seen it?

opinions on the hobbit? I thought it was brilliant, felt a bit more in depth than LOTR.
love both though, can't wait for the sequel.

Absolute garbage

I thought it was average, not enough captivating as lotr

I thought it was enjoyable not as good or dark as lotr although when I first watched the fellowship I thought that it was a bit boring

Only kidding, I didn't think it was absolute garbage, I thought it was an excellent starter movie for the trilogy and I'm lookin forward to the next one. I just wish Jackson would make something from The Horus Heresy books (LotR in the 30th millennium)

FTE {Ed001's Note - there is Warhammer movies in the pipeline mate. Games Workshop are planning to make some.}

What! If this is true and I've no reason to doubt you Ed 001, then you have made my day. Cheers Ed 001

FTE {Ed001's Note - it is 100% true, I believe the first one planned is a Space Marine film, though I have no idea of any more than that or when it will happen. I think it could be bigger and better than Star Wars, for me, and I love Star Wars.}

Watched and read everything to do with Star Wars myself Ed001, and thought nothing could beat it till I read HH. Howd you think the next Star Wars film will do? I have high hopes myself. {Ed001's Note - I am worried by the Disney involvement to be honest. I was so excited by the idea of the prequels, only to be disappointed, so I am not getting my hopes up.}

As long as they don't put Mickey in the background like they did with ET, that would surely be a tragedy. Did you ever see the comic where the Millenium Falcon crash landed on Earth and Indiana Jones was investigating the legend of the big foot ( Chewbacca ) only to find Han Solo's skeleton in the cockpit, twas pretty cool.

FTE {Ed001's Note - no, never saw that, but it does sound like a nice twist.}

26 Feb 2013 18:39:16
I remember a mate of mine who had that comic, was a brilliant touch. WarHammer was something I could never get into, although I knew guys who went mad for it. I couldn't be done with messing with little figures, but I could probably cope with fiction or a movie. It does sound an interesting concept and universe, so where would be a good idea to start? MrE {Ed001's Note - if you want my recommendation, I would suggest reading a book called Double Eagle, by Dan Abnett. I thought it was an excellent piece of sci-fi, the best I have read, in fact.}

26 Feb 2013 18:54:40
Ok cheers ed i'll try and find it. MrE {Ed001's Note - if you can't find it on places like Amazon, try blacklibrary.com, though it can be quite pricey on there as it is an older book. I believe they only do it as a print on demand book.}

Played the table top game a few times but it kept ending in people going in cream puffs, myself included. If your going to read a Warhammer book go for Horus Rising by Dan Abnett.

18 Feb 2013 18:09:38
Die hard 5 what's are peoples opinions?

Absolute garbage.

10 Feb 2013 11:43:37
Ok I was born in the 80's so i'm biased but all the best movies were made in the 80's. I've had a bit of an 80's film watch over the last couple of weeks and the thing that stands out is that they just don't make films like that anymore. Its got too technical with too much computer generated monsters/ stunts/ whatever taking over to the point where its detracting from films as it seems more important what you can show on screen rather than building plot and character. Also its got a bit snobbery as well as in who's got the best computer gadget to boost pixels and them we have 3d as well. Anyway the films i've watched over the last two weeks have included: Top Gun, Romancing the Stone, Jumping Jack Flash, Three Men and A Baby, Back to the Future (all three), Crocodile Dundee (one and two) and Police Academy. Ok I recognise that not all of them are great and some have dated badly especially where computer and phone technology is involved. But what they all have in common is good plot, stories, great characterisation, a reliance on actors delivering and humour. And the humour is actually funny and is a gentle humour, not gross out sick or cruel bullying like in a lot of so called comedy films made over the last decade. Without relying on big elaborate sets enhanced with computers the emphasis was on actors acting. I find the more cgi in a film the lower the acting skills. Also they were entertaining. Genuinely entertaining. Now films seem to be made to just make money or advertise the computer skills of the it team. Not for entertainment. All the films I listed are genuinely entertaining where's the modern equivalent of say Police Academy or Jumping Jack Flash? I think Hollywood has lost its imagination to a degree, and also lost its joy. Anyway if you've read this far thanks and feel free to comment, agree or disagree. MrE

Not to mention the numerous brilliant John Hughes films.

Apart from BTTF and Top Gun, you should have picked better than three men and police academy as examples! What about Aliens, Terminator, Raiders of the lost ark?

PesLegend

Forgot to mention E. T, Ghostbusters and Platoon. i'm in the mood for an 80's weekend of film now! Cheers mate!

PesLegend

26 Feb 2013 18:33:57
PesLegend cheers mate, I was basing it on films i'd seen lately, not what I thought were the best of the decade. Although if I were going for a best of the 80's all what you listed would be in there and more. Just backs up my point that it was the greatest decade for film. MrE

John hughes, one of the best, some kind of wonderfull and ferris buellers day off oh and the breakfast club, few of the best films ever.

09 Feb 2013 23:53:36
Prometheus. What a load of cack. What was the point. O yeah cash in on a once great franchise and kill it further in the name of making a buck.

I think it was a bit poor but hopefully they will realize that and make the second movie a lot better. has a great story though.

JK92

There was a story? More like a series of accidents and stupidity leading to most of the crew getting killed.

Too much stuff wasn't explained properly over the course of the film; I don't mind setting stuff up for sequels or long story arcs, I am after all a Dr Who and Babylon 5 fan so can cope with that sort of stuff, but that's tv shows spread over several months not blockbuster big franchise films that's spread over a couple of years.

Too many characters that had potential got wasted and never really had potential to develop, like Charlize Theron's Miss Vickers who at first you think is a potential villain actually didn't do anything wrong and showed the most common sense, not to mention conflict with her father and yet she's bumped off in a really lazy way.

And as much as I like Noomi Rapace I don't buy the whole Christian scientist gig, its too much of a core conflict in reality.

They really need to get the sequal right or Scott will have done a Lucas.

08 Feb 2013 23:09:57
Gears of war

I'm guessing this was a reply to my post?
if it is I agree that would be a good movie.

JK92

Yes was suppose to be, clicked reply to post.

08 Feb 2013 19:13:43
Friday night sorted, bit of Jet Li in Hero.

On films like that in the big 1000 strong battle scenes do they use cgi or is it literally just loads of extras. I imagine it would be costly doing the costumes, but China aren't short of manpower whereas Hollywood would just cgi everything. I'm guessing the sky full of arrows stuff is cgi'd.

Never realised Donnie Yen was in hero till the other night! {Ed001's Note - I love Donnie Yen, but I am not a fan of Hero, too arty for me.}

I get what you mean, the girl on girl fight with all the blowing leaves was arty and the jumping about on wires in trees stuff as well. Good story though and they are done well. {Ed001's Note - I just don't like all the wire fighting etc, it doesn't work for me.}

07 Feb 2013 10:25:41

Hitman is being rebooted with Paul Walker! {Ed001's Note - Hitman I am pleased about, but Paul Walker just ruined it! Talk about deflating, he can't act that lad.}

Thats the story Ed, I agree its like finding £20 quid on the floor and it turning out to be fake.

I think he's barely adequate in F & F franchise, and there just popcorn entertainment films.

I didn't think Hitman was that bad a film, ok needed a few tweaks. Thought Olyphaunt did alright. {Ed001's Note - same here, I enjoyed Hitman myself.}

Big fan of the games so I enjoyed the film and especially all the little nods in scenes to the games as well for the fans, and it was good to see someone who isn't the usual name play the lead.

I am hoping that its just an unconfirmed rumour and not actually happening. I can tolerate Walker playing some goofball flash street racer, those films aren't even about the acting, plot or story anyway, but I just can't see him as a ruthless, cold professional killer.

I've never really been a fan of movies from games but apparently there is an uncharted movie set to be made soon, which would be good.

I watched Silver Linings Playbook and found it surprisingly a very good film. It is definitely worth watching and I have already seen it twice. Cooper is very convincing and is a talented actor and Lawrence is an outstanding actress. De Niro is very convincing in his role as Cooper's father but what other word fits Robert de Niro than living legend.
I highly recommend this film

whats everyone's views on django unchained? I thought it was the best Tarantino film to date!

I thought it was really good, gunna watch it again.

JK92

I thought it was okay but I doubt I'll watch again too long for me.
Scouse_Pride

The more I thought about it the more I liked it. Quality flick

Bulmer

I expected better to be honest. Some great performances as usual, but it just seemed to parody itself a little too much. If it had taken itself a bit more seriously I would have had it in my top ten. Sadly, I felt a little disappointed.

Ed I notice you seem to have a low opinion on actresses, and I do have to agree that nowadays it seems that casting goes on looks rather than talent. So who would be your favourite actresses on talent only? Personally Cate Blanchett is always good value. {Ed001's Note - I can't think of any off the top of my head, being perfectly honest, other than Halle Berry. Well other than old timers, such as Helen Mirren and Judy Dench, that is, those two can both act, that is for sure. Not seen much of Blanchett, but I never saw any real signs of talent in the little I have seen. Her voice isn't strong enough and she doesn't have any real charisma.}

Sigourney Weaver?

JK92 {Ed001's Note - good shout, though she would come under the old timer label too surely?}

Some of the best films ever made have no female leads worth mentioning. First and foremost The Thing, Predator, The Good The Bad The Ugly, Ravenous, The Thirteenth Warrior, The 300, 12 Angry Men, The Descent.

I love the alien movies so sigourney weaver is probably my favourite actress.
Kathy Bates and Dakota Fanning are also good actresses.

JK92

Ed I've got to disagree with ya on Halle Berry!

I kind of see where the OP is coming from with Blanchett.

Weaver, Mirren & Dench I'd agree with.

I'd also put forward Meryl Streep, made Mamma Mia bearable when I got dragged to see it, and more than deserevd the Oscar for The Iron Lady for eliciting sympathy for that woman! What more can you say? {Ed001's Note - Halle Berry has been brilliant in some of her roles. She clearly has talent, she just needs to pick better roles and avoid dross like Catwoman.}

I must have seen all the dross ones then ed1. {Ed001's Note - I think it was Jungle Fever where she played a crack head, pretty sure her boyfriend was played by Samuel L Jackson, she was brilliant in that.}

Doesn't sound like my bag.

Whats your thoughts on Charlize Theron? She's done some decent stuff.

Wracking my brains trying to think of actresses under 50 who can act. {Ed001's Note - she is just ok, not the worst certainly, but doesn't really stand out. I wonder how much is down to the parts they get? I mean I was thinking about it, is it that they are awful, or is it that the parts they get given are awful? No matter how good an actor is, if the director wants them to play it a certain way, they will come off as poor.}

Dakota fanning is a decent actor, she's just been in some terrible films.
LP

Jennifer Lawrence is good actress. And jolie is good also. .

Just thinking who's won the Oscar lately although looking at some of the recent winners its hardly a litmus test anymore is it?

I do think a lot of it is down to the parts they get. As said before certain actresses seem to gte plum roles based on looks rather than ability.

Also I think the parts written for women tend to be quite weak, its either pretty damsel in distress, mattress fodder for the likes of Bond, or so on. Not many Ripley type roles around these days.

I think its a combo, a lot of bad parts are round, but also a lot of bad actresses around to pick from. And yeah direction can throw a spanner in the works as well.

Scary thought! Who would play Ripley in an Alien remake?

Probably arnold swarchenegger (spelling)
huddz red ;-)

Emma Stone for me.

KiwiRed

Tilda Swinton all day long. {Ed001's Note - I had to google her!}

Anne Hathaway has went up in my estimation due to tdkr and les miserable. She really has started to shine on screen. No one will ever take the title from weaver though!

Just watched The Grey and thought it was a good film. What's everyone's opinion on it?

I thought it was a good film, I was surprised by the lack of attention it got
LP {Ed001's Note - really? I was too busy laughing at the scene where all these yellow eyes appeared out of the dark. Awful, truly awful that was, I couldn't be bothered to watch any more.}

What about Liam Neeson in Taken 2 How much crap was that. The bit where his daughter used grenades to track him down reminded me of Peter Griffin using his thinking grenades in Family Guy. First film was brilliant though. {Ed001's Note - it wasn't in the same league as the first one, but it was enjoyable at the cinema, well my daughter loved it, which made it an enjoyable evening to go and see it for me. At least the sound to time a distance had some basis in reality, unlike the eyes in The Grey, they didn't have to be within reach of the glare of the fire, they just magically appeared like stars! It was pathetic.}

I thought the wolves in the grey were very unrealistic but overall I thought the film was good.
LP

Lol ed, it wasn't even eye shine either just some big yellow eyes floating in the darkness.
It was a decent film but I won't watch it again in a hurry.

JK92 {Ed001's Note - I couldn't sit through it, that bit was just so ridiculous I had to turn it off. The very fact the Wolves came that near, in itself was ludicrous. Wolves pick on the weak and feeble, they don't show themselves, they stalk prey, waiting for it show signs of weakness. They would have dragged the original body away to eat in peace and safety, not got into a needless fight. I suppose it wouldn't have made much of a story that way though.}
