{Ed039's Note - Some movies I am looking forward to this Spring/Summer, Spiderman 2, Xmen, Transformers & Captain America, which one you looking forward to most, have a wee vote on our voting poll and/or leave some comments below

Guardians of the Galaxy and TASM 2 will be the most hyped films of the year (comic book wise) with CAP2 probably being the best film. Although X-men:DOFP will be my most anticipated, if done right will connect the two series of films andf instantly open up a number of characters to be used oin furure releases.

As for most anticipated film of the year well that is a lot harder but I wouold probably go with dawn of the planet of the apes. It looks so good and have seen so little so far but am super excited!

I think all the X men films are let downs, someone should start from scratch and remake them all, even I could do a better job than the directors of the films, I'll give the next lot of X men films a miss thanks, Transformers and Spider-Man 2 will be interesting to see how they turn out, just hope they both fulfil there potential

Really excited for this film, although the 90s attempt wasnt great it also wasnt too bad. The setting and effects look amazing.

Does anyone have high hopes for Dumb & Dumber to? I'm excited yet scared it may ruin one of the greatest comedies ever made & 2 of the most loveable characters I've ever saw.

Larky Bear {Ed001's Note - seriously? Great comedy and lovable characters in Dumb and Dumber??? It was awful!}

Have to disagree ed, one of my favourite comedies! I'm curious about how the second one will go. can't see it being as good as the first

Ed 001 Dumb and Dumber is actually a brilliant film, I honestly do not know a 'modern' slapstick film that is executed any better. The characters are believable within the setting created and are hilarious on top. The scene at the end with the bus looking for directions is genius. If you compare it to newer attempts of similar style comedy it is head and shoulders above.

The sequel will never be as good as the original but that is generally the rule, and if this film bucks the trend that would be great.

I may be biased in my assesment as I was only 10 when the film was released but still feel it has stood up well over time and would put it in the same bracket as caddyshack, spaceballs, baseketball etc {Ed001's Note - ah yes, that says it all, you were 10. It is a childish load of crap, in my opinion, not even close to Spaceballs as a comedy and Jim Carrey is as unfunny as it is possible to be anyway.}

I knew it would come down to your hatred of jim carrey ;)

And yeah it is a silly stupid film but I feel it was executed very well. With great slapstick comedy elements throughout, and doesn't try to be anything other than that.

Spaceballs, however great a film hasn't dated well and feels very 80s, whereas dumb and dumber is still very funny to new watchers as my nephew claims. {Ed001's Note - Spaceballs is dated, I agree, but Dumb and Dumber was always rubbish and just idiotic. Silly and stupid can be good, Airplane and the Naked Guns show that, but Dumb and Dumber was just silly and stupid without being funny. It was annoying, for me. Maybe I was just too old when it came out, being an adult, or maybe it is because I find stupidity annoying rather than funny? I have no idea, I just didn't like the film in the slightest. I do admit though, I do hate Carrey, but it was because of this film I first began to hate him. He is just not funny to me.}

Fair dues ed, I guess the age bracket makes a big difference. Also agree its not in the same bracket as any leslie neilsen film. Man he was great at the stupid 1 liners, my fav is prob:

Frank:It’s the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girl dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Day.
Jane:Goodyear?
Frank:No, the worst.

But still I stand by the fact that it is a great film and a real funny sunday afternoon filler. But this is why we love film forums on the internet it brings people from all over the world with all different opinions easily together where they can discuss things in an intellectual manner ;) {Ed001's Note - yes, no doubt while screaming obscenities at the screen in reality! Or that could just be me?}

28 Feb 2014 18:08:09
Have to agree ed, its a poor film. I think his biggest problem is he overacts, he goes too far and never reigns himself in, ace Ventura is a good example, funny till he goes over the top.

Personally i'd nominate mousehunt as best 90s slapstick film.

Haha I've missed all this Ed001 tearing into one of my favourite films it may be an age thing as I am only 22. I do have a stupid sense of humour when it comes to comedy but it is Dumb & Dumber stupid not Just any old spoof thrown together with Movie at the end. Just out of curiosity Ed & fellow posters at present who are your favourite modern day comedy actors? I love James Franco in a comedy apart from Your highness Robert Downey Junior & Kevin Spacey just for horrible bosses really Denzel & Walberg too but there not usually known for comedy. So Jonah Hill, Zach Galfianakis & Melissa McCarthy top the list they can really make me laugh. Notable mentions Steve Carrell, Ben Stiller & Jack Black all funny in there own ways.

Larky Bear {Ed001's Note - I liked Horrible Bosses, made me laugh. Not sure I particularly rate any out and out comedy actors, especially the last 6 you mention, who all just annoy me. Doesn't mean I can't enjoy films they are in, such as Little Fockers I enjoyed, but I just don't rate them as actors, they don't improve the films, they just happen to be in them. Jack Black is just a knob, in my opinion.}

I was just looking at forthcoming movies and which I would like to see, when I noticed one that I was thinking of watching had Nic Cage in. Immediately I was put off, just because I know he will be awful, again, in whatever role he attempts to play.

Anyway, it got me to thinking, which films that would otherwise be brilliant, are pulled down by an actor, that either doesn't fit or is just a rubbish actor.

I would say the two National Treasure movies, even though they are the usual Disney trash, would be much more enjoyable without Cage. Also Roadhouse, Swayze is just the worst possible choice for a doorman/bouncer they could have made.

Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher, decent film but he's a bit too clean for a guy who's a drifter getting his clothes from charity shops and the like.

Val Kilmer in The Saint. Val Kilmer in Willow. Val Kilmer in Heat. Val Kilmer in pretty much anything other than Top Gun.

George Lazenby as Bond, decent chap but just something and tried too hard to compensate and over did it.

Diane Kruger as Helen in Troy. Decent enough to look at, but not enough to make me take 50000 warriors to Turkey. Subjective I know, each to their own. She was also wooden as hell.

Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice, again just lacking that spark, that charisma. The guy playing Darcy was poor as well.

I'm thinking of more.

Mort

I think your being harsh in Road hours I love that film Swayzes not the best but it's a classic lol. Ed I did love a few of Nic Cages older films like Faceoff & Con Air just for there enjoyable unrealistic brilliance John Malkovich is the star of the show in Con Air right enough. Mort Val Kilmer was phenomenal in Tombstone. He could have done much better in Heat I think the character kind of held him back. This is a great question Ed I'm struggling to think. Will Smith in Ali a film about that mans life deserves to be epic I suppose directors are just as much to blame sometimes though. The guy who plays Doug in the hangover really annoys me there could have been a much funnier actor in the cast that would have made the 2nd & 3rd films so much better. Il think of more struggling at this time of night.

I'm not really one for westerns' I find them all a bit the same old same old. And the whole gunfight at the ok corral is all hype and myth, over in 6 seconds in reality and some controversy on who shot first.

He wasn't bad in Heat but by then I was on a roll.

I agree with you regards 90's Nic Cage films, entertaining.

I actually thought Will Smith was alright in Ali, and I believe the man himself agreed. Although I have bad memories of that film, 2 hours after watching it I was in hospital.

Going back to Bond and On Her Majesty's Secret Service, as well as Bond being miscast, Telly Savalas was miscast as Blofeld. Not threatening.

{Ed013's Note - What did you or the kids think of the new lego movie? Please take a few moments to vote on our movie polls page. Thanks in advance}

I know people who have seen it and recommend it

{Ed013's Note - Have you seen the new Robocop film? If so what do you think? Please take a few seconds to vote out of 5 for this film on the Movies voting polls page. Thanks in advance}

Really want it to be absolutley bad ass but in reality it will just be utter garbage i'm sure. My view is mainly down to the rating of pg13.

How can a dystopian future be acceptable for children to watch?! How can the edgy rawness of the original be translated into a remake with a pg13 rating?

I am not sold and will not be visiting the cinema to watch it.

How good is the transformers soundtrack?
