Yes Ed i'll watch anything with Jet Li in it, even Romeo Must Die. And Mummy 3 (well maybe not Mummy 3) Some sick skills though.

And he really does make a very good villian, he's a bit chilling in Lethal Weapon 4, i was worried fro Mel Gibson at one point. And even in War, where SPOILERS he's revealed in the twist to not be who you think he is, he's got a convincing nasty edge to him.

Tony Jaa i've not seen so much of, never seems to be on tv. I'll have a look out.

Mort {Ed001's Note - Ong Bak is one of my favourite films ever mate, if you can find it, I highly recommend it.}

And Warrior King as well Tony Jaa is unreal.

Ziyi zhang is a good actress, martial artist and my future wife! Lol ;-) {Ed001's Note - 2 out of 3 is good I guess!}

Just seen this haha, she is pretty good, but i've always wondered how much is down to the choreography compared to others like Michelle Yeoh and her male contemporaries. Yes i know that all these films are choreographed, but the likes of Jet Li are prize winning martial artists (Jet Li was ridiculous as a martial artist, 15 gold medals in wushu championships, competing against adults!)

Mort {Ed001's Note - Jet Li's skills are unreal, lightning fast hands and feet. Tony Jaa is another that is extremely skilful. Cynthia Rothrock, to be fair, was a top fighter too, shame she couldn't act.}

Hmmm a Jaws remake, now there is an idea, done right that could be very good. Maybe once they've ran out of Marvel characters, and 80's kids toys you might have a chance.

I think Johnny Depp as Quint is inspired, if anyone could pull of crusty ol sea dog its Depp. Unless anyone else has suggestions?

Will Smith as Hooper, i think is a little out there, how about Jamie Foxx? He's done rugged action guy in the Kingdom and his turn in Collateral shows a more quiet side till pushed into action, which I think would suit Jaws and the Hooper role, going from scientist to fighting for survival.

Brody I agree is a tough choice, epescially if your determined on a woman. Again like the Hooper role i can see the reasoning, and I think something like that could be the shot that an action chick role needs. A role of authority and responsibility as sheriff and in the end Brody was tough and resourceful. However i am struggling for ideas for that one, all i cna think of is Angelina Jolie or Jennifer Garner and i'm leaning more towards Garner there. You wouldn't want someoen though who was all T & A.

Good luck on your script, hopefully you could get somewhere.

27 Sep 2012 13:23:29
liking the action woman discussion. I'm writing a script for a remake of jaws but was going to have officer brody as a woman give it a bit of a twist but couldn't think of anyone who could do it. I've got down will smith as hooper and johnny depp as quint but brody keeps eluding me.

26 Sep 2012 20:20:59
Its not like there is a shortage of roles either for potential action women roles:

Of the top of my head from tv and cinema and games i came up with:

Ripley (Alien)
Buffy (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
Chun Li (Streetfighter)
Jill Valentine/ Claire Redfield (Resident Evil)
Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)
Catwoman (Batman)
Batgirl (Batman)
Wonder Woman
Sarah Connor (Terminator)

And then there are loads of others that you could easily do.

Mort {Ed001's Note - maybe one day they will find a good female action star.}

Does Uma Thurmann as The Bride in the Kill Bill series count . Also Hit Girl in Kick Ass.......DH {Ed001's Note - Uma Thurman was dreadful in Kill Bill! in fact in every film she has ever done, but particularly in Kill Bill.}

26 Sep 2012 19:04:32
Agreed Ed1, there is a load of male action stars, just look at the cast of the expendables films, and a lot of them started off in martial arts or body building or other sports and have had pretty good careers mostly.

Whereas women action stars you can count on 1 hand (probably captain hook's...)

I think though with women most of them get cast because of how they look and talent a distant second. Whether acting talent or any kind of martial arts talent, doesn't matter as they go for looks first as they need some eye candy to get people into the cinema. Scarlett Johansson is a good example. Yes she does well as Black Widow, although as you say it helps as you've already gone in with the suspension of belief and the attitude of well its only a superhero movie so your expectations are lowered. But she did largely get cast as lets face it she's not bad looking and looks good in a tight cat suit, so gets the teenage lads even more interested. She could have been a triple black belt and champion boxer but if she had a face like a bag of spanners she wouldn't have gotten cast.

Michelle Yeoh is a good call, she is good at her martial arts, although i'm only really going of Crouching Tiger and Tomorrow Never Dies. But i'm struggling to think of anyone else other than her. I think the Chinese have a different attitude and any female action stars are more liekly to come from there, i think its a culture thing as much as anything else. If that makes any sense.

Mort {Ed001's Note - Michelle Yeoh was a TKD champion if I remember rightly, and hot as hell too. There are quite a few female martial arts stars, but I was trying to think of one who could actually act too! We don't want another Cynthia Rothrock, great at martial arts, looks good, but can't act to save her life. You are right about how women are chosen though, unfortunately I can't see that changing any time soon.}

Ziyi zhang is a good actress, martial artist and my future wife! Lol ;-) {Ed001's Note - 2 out of 3 is good I guess!}

26 Sep 2012 13:49:03
whilst we're on the subject of games and film crossovers. Another series that had potential and got wasted was tomb raider. Mort {Ed001's Note - agreed, a real waste of a film that could have been great. The problem with films like this is a lack of real charismatic female action stars. There are loads of blokes that can carry these roles off, but very few women. I have to say fair play to Scarlett Johansson, while I am not a fan of hers, she does carry off the Black Widow role very well. Though, it being a superhero film, you are going in to it with belief suspended anyway, so it is not so hard for her. Maybe they should go for a Michelle Yeoh type of actress, someone who you know is actually a very capable martial artist in real life, so it is not so difficult to accept her?}

The alien vs predator if done as a proper horror like alien were you dont really see much of it would have been good instead of an action movie, i would love to see a marvel/dc crossover movie one day as well

I'm looking forward to watching that new horror film with Ethan hawke in it called.... Sinister

24 Sep 2012 20:31:49
Just dug out my freddy collection out and currently watching nightmare on elm street 1, this film is still better than most horrors nowadays
Huddz red {Ed001's Note - shame the rest of them were so poor, but the first one was a classic.}

I agree I've got the box set n I only ever watch the 1st one, one of the best horror films ever IMO.....it was the 1st horror fin I ever watched..... We were all watching it in my bedroom on my tv near window n my dad thought it would be funny to sneak outside, climb up a ladder to my window and start scratching the window, so we opened the curtains and needless to say we rubbish ourselves when he shouted boooo.......lol..... Happy days

Andy

I quite liked number 2 as well then they get progressively worse, freddys dead being spectacularly bad

What does everyone think of the resident evil movies? I've just seen the trailer for the new film retribution n have to say it looks as bad as the rest of them, I am really disappointed with all resident evil films, I think the way Hollywood has made them is really bad! They have made it into a joke with there bad scripts,very bad acting and over the top pathetic action scenes! I think we need a reboot! What do you lot think? {Ed001's Note - I am with you, they picked the wrong lead, the wrong scripts and put them together badly. Awful films, and that is being polite about them.}

I enjoyed the first one, and the second as well, good Friday night chill out fodder with the lads, a pizza and few beers. Entertaining enough. The third one was wobbly though and only saw the 4th on Friday. It wasnt very good. Almost matrix part 4 in places, i'm all for suspension of belief but...!

However for a film based on computer game, your never gonna get the godfather. I think its just the law of diminshing reurns.

Ed who would you have picked as the lead? I think they went with Milla Jovovich as cheap eye candy to get in the randy teenagers lol.

Mort {Ed001's Note - I just don't find her the slightest bit attractive, repulsive if anything, plus she can't act to save her life. It needs someone who at least has a bit of charisma and can make you believe their part. There are plenty of women out there who can act, any of them would have been better. The film needs more scares though, it should be a horror/action flick, not just pure action.}

True Ed, that was the point of the games, made you jump a few times, a bit tense and psychological in places. It had atmosphere.

I think thats the problem though. The games most of the time your wondering around trying to figure out whats going on and solving puzzles to get info and onto the next level, with the odd rumble here and there and bosses. There were times when something jumped at you for a visual scare but a lot of it was created in your mind by the atmosphere, it was tense and creepy and chilling and played with your mind a little. Like the Silent Hill series. Which also didn't make a good movie. I think those types of games are hard to pull off as movies as they need to be done right. Instead they cut out the tense psychological drama and went for cheap thrills action As i said perfect Friday night chill out fodder, but not in the spirit or style of the games.

Had so much more potential but ah well.

Milla isn't the greatest actress true, she does seem to have about 2 expressions, annoyed and worried and not sure she pulls worried off that well. I wouldn't say repulsive but i think she was definitley hired for her looks.

Mort {Ed001's Note - I don't know why, she looks like a boy.}

Fair enough Ed. I'll probably end up renting the new RE film at some point, not going the cinema too expensive, just to see it.

I think there's definitley a gap in the market for a flm franchise like RE or Silent Hill but done properly i.e. out of Hollywood. And actually tense and chilling, you know like Alien was or even the 1st Terminator. Something of that nature rather than just all action, loud bangs and lots of shooting like the RE films are.

Mort {Ed001's Note - I agree, there is a fairly decent horror movie in those games, if someone would just make it instead of trying to make an action movie.}

Anyone else extremely excited for James Bond month on sky movies?
LP

I am really looking forward to it. I'm 38 now and still get "excited" as ever when Jimmy Bond is on TV. The films are timeless and classic for what they are.

Jimmy Bond always makes me think of Woody Allen.

Skyfall looks good and hopefully is a few steps up from QoS...

20 Sep 2012 15:03:08
{Ed001's Note - I was just bored and thinking last night, while half watching a film with a terrible bunch of baddies, none of whom convinced. I was just wondering who were the bad guys from films who stuck in people's heads as the best baddies they had seen?
MY top 5:
5. Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes) in Demolition Man. A great, completely over the top, pantomine villain. Not the scariest, not the baddest, but still great to watch.
4. Darth Vader (David Prowse/James Earl Jones) in the Star Wars films. I grew up with the Star Wars films, always loved them, and so I had to include Darth Vader somewhere. He is everything you want in a baddie, menacing, not just in looks but that brilliant voice over by James Earl Jones, evil and he can kill with a mere gesture.
3. Detective Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington) in Training Day. A truly great actor giving a truly great performance.
2. The Joker (Heath Ledger) in The Dark Knight. What can I say about this performance that hasn't already been said? It was a breathtaking performance by Ledger.
1. Nino Brown (Wesley Snipes) in New Jack City. I wasn't intending to include Snipes twice, but this is his greatest performance, by far, and it is difficult to leave it out. The film took gangster films and turned them into 'gangsta' movies for the hip hop generation. Wesley Snipes was fantastic in it as Nino Brown, the evil guy who continually played the system and got away with murder, literally.
A special mention has to go to Unicron, from the original Transformers movie. Unlike the Decepticons of the new batch of films, who are a bit pathetic, Unicron was a world eating giant robot.
I am sure I have missed loads, probably some I would have put in my top 5 if I had thought of them, but that's my off the top of my head list.}

Definitely Tom Hardy as Bane and I suppose Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort could be in with a chance
LP

Definitely Unicron Ed, scared the crap out of me when i was 6 for the way he ruthlessly destroyed half my toy collection, i ended up watching the video 6 times one saturday, got the most out of the rental lol.

I'd also go with Vader, Heath Ledger, and anything Snipes does.

Not in any order just as i think of them, and some might not be traditional villains but:

Begbie/ Trainspsotting - Robert Carlyle, not a real villain, but what more do you want in a small time psycho? Very convincing performance and lets face it we all know the pubs that have a "Begbie" and avoid them!

Cunningham/ Rob Roy - Tim Roth, a curveball this but i thought he did a great job, quite chilling in places, very under rated actor.

Khan/ ST 2 The Wrath of Khan - Ricardo Montalban, again another one from when i was a kid that kind of stuck with me, that relentless all consuming thirst for revenge even with his dying breath, that and sticking bugs in peoples heads to control them.

I can probably think of a few more but minds gone blank.... {Ed001's Note - I agree Tim Roth is a good actor, I do like him. Never liked any Star Trek film, they have all been consistently dross and I have never watched Trainspotting.}

Tim Roth is great never seems to get the roles he deserves.

Star Trek, well its down to preference, watched them a lot as akid and as a kid, well he kinda stood out.

Trainspotting i'm not sure if its your bag Ed, but Robert Carlyle, another good actor is very good as a nutter. {Ed001's Note - Trainspotting just doesn't appeal to me, the subject matter is just not my thing.}

Didn't think it would be Ed

Christian bale-american psycho
helena bonham-carter harry potter
alan rickman- harry potter/ die hard
jack nicholson-batman/ shining
jeremy irons- die hard
ray liotta-goodfellas
dustin hoffman-hook(just because i had to include him)

In no order.

Cyrus The Virus - con air

joker - batman

Hannibal

darth vader

alan rickman - sheriff of notts.

JK92

Greatest villain actor of all time is without doubt Gary oldman can't believe no one has mentioned him yet great in speed, Leon and true romance.
Also think mark Strong is very good villain actor kick ass, Sherlock Holmes and Robin Hood

CHRIS

If you are a Tim Roth fan I would highly recommend tracking down a 1997 film called Liar (UK) or Deceiver (USA). A great thriller with Roth, Chris Penn and Michael Rooker amongst others. I was very surprised how much I enjoyed it when it came out. If you like Tarantino and films that rely heavily on their dialogue to forward the story you should enjoy this.

Ed007

P.S. Darth Vader is NOT a villain!!

Ed007

Heath Ledger's performance as the joker was one of the best ever. Brilliant.

I know the film is loved and hated equally, but Cristoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds as The Jew Hunter was very good. Probably the best thing about the film.

G.A.G.U.S

Tom Cruise - Collateral
Kevin Spacey - Seven
Arnie - Terminator
Heath Ledger - The Dark Knight
Rutger Hauer - The Hitcher

All the new Batman villians I must say are the rubbish but I think Tom Hardy as Bane is not as good as Joker but not a million miles either.

Ben Mendelsohn as Pope in Animal Kingdom is one who has really stuck in my head. A serious performance very unsettling and very subtle.

Red88

Typing error didn't call them rubbish. But said they were the s--t

Red88 {Ed001's Note - it's the swear filter mate, it changed the word.}

Watched Inglourious Basterds last night. Thought it was pretty good, though a little over the top at times.

G.A.G.U.S

Yeah great movie, brad pitt is a super actor, rarely makes a bad film but christop waltz stole the show.

Its good and bad. Well acted and all that but i think its a bit poor taste in places. {Ed001's Note - I thought it was typical of Tarantino myself, lots of violence but no substance to the film whatsoever. Bit like James Cameron does with effects, it just covers up the lack of any good writing or decent film making.}

Yes Ed think thats what i meant, i think at times it was just violence for the sake of it, typical tarantino as you say. I did enjoy bits of it, especially the bit in the bar, when they make contact with the girl spy and that german bloke susses them out which was quite tense before it ends up in some daft spaghettii western style shoot em up. But a lot of it was just daft. {Ed001's Note - I didn't get that far, lost patience with it before that.}

19 Sep 2012 13:31:42
Just thought I'd let everyone and ed001 know that martial arts season is starting tomorrow on film4 with ip man and ipman 2
Huddz red {Ed001's Note - the problem is that all the films they are showing I have on blu ray or DVD already. Thanks though, I will probably end up watching a few of them anyway, the Ip Man films are excellent.}

18 Sep 2012 16:52:56
The Raid - went to see it earlier this year at the cinema, wonder what everyone else thought?

RB1

Watched Animal Kingdom which was very good, ides of march wasn't bad but its got Ryan Gosling in so anything is worth watching with him in.

14 Sep 2012 07:07:07
I watched the Godfather part 1 and part 2 for the first time the other day. I have to say they are very good films. Al Pacino is simply amazing in those two films, some of the best acting I've personally seen.
KiwiRed

Marlon brando is king

i watched part 1 the other day for the first time

i think the problem watching it is that it was 40 years ago now so special affects are so good these days it makes that film look worse

curt

To be fair Curt, its strengths are plot and characterisation, much like Shawshank or the Departed. So yes it doesn't look as good as some of the more flashy recent films, but it knocks the socks of them in terms of actual quality.

Agreed films from 30-40 years ago which are effects heavy and at the time cutting edge, now look rubbish. But there are many good films from 30-50 years ago that are not effects laden but rely on good plot, strong characters and good writing and still hold up.

Honestly I didnt even notice the lack of decent special effects because the acting and plot was so good.
KiwiRed

Part 2 is good if you don't mind the chopping between era's.

3 isn't that good sadly.

Once you have seen The Godfather films your next watch should definitely be Once Upon A Time in America. If any film can push The Godfather(s) it is this one.

Ed007

Ah Bond yes but a word of caution, make sure you have a soft seat or have a break cos it is lengthy.

11 Sep 2012 12:09:38
Went to see dredd 3d and the weekend. I thought it started off brilliantly then turned out to be just an average film. What's others peoples thoughts on the movie?

Rubbish

Just been to watch it and I agree though it was better than the other version. The shootings in slow motion in 3d were good but there wasn't enough of it could have been better but it was ok I've seen worse films.

I am a massive judge dress can and have been since I started 2000ad comics many years ago. Anything will be better than that Stallone crap, and yes this film could be better but it was working on a shoestring budget, hence nearly all the action in one place. Hopefully this film will do well and we get a dredd sequel with a lot bigger budget

Anyone think The Grey is underrated?

ed and anyone else that would like to answer

if your missus gave you a hall pass so to speak for one night with any woman (actress) who would it be?

curt {Ed001's Note - Tia Carrere.}

Mine would be samaire armstrong (yes it is a woman) always had a soft spot for her hopefully she reads this ;)

curt {Ed001's Note - she does look a bit boyish mind (and yes I did have to Google her).....}

When shes got short hair she does but with long hair or in the film its a boy girl thing

i had to google your choice too lol

Mine would be mila kunis ...

im guessing ed007 would find it hard to pick between Sharon Osborne and Susanne Boyle lol.

JK92 {Ed001's Note - or Judy Finnegan.}

Ahh forgot about mila kunis

to be honest theres too many hot women in this world

i wouldnt say no to sharon osbourne ;)

curt

Scarlett Johansson. Easiest question ever, she is incredible.
KiwiRed

I thought Mila or Scarlett at first too, but having seen them without rubbish loads of make up, have to say nothing special. Two who always look good are Cheryl Cole and Kelly Brook

Milla Jovovich

Olivia wilde or emily blunt

Some of the sky sports news girls aren't bad either :)
LP

Kate Beckinsale, Underworld, say no more.

Kunis no question

i watched drive the other night got to agree with you ed001 it wasnt an amazing film

i found it a bit cringey to watch at times with the awkward stares between carey mulligan and ryan gosling

curt {Ed001's Note - shame really, it could have been such a good film, but even the effects were poor. At the end when he crashes into the other car, yet his headlights are in perfect working order afterward!}

Just looked it up in idbm and the plot is a bit like 44 inch chest with ray winstone with the kidnapping the lover bit. have you seen it ed? good film imo
hudz red {Ed001's Note - I wasn't impressed with 44 inch chest, I much prefer Four, but there are a few similarities.}

just looking on hmv on their 5 blu rays for 30 quid offer and was looking at upgrading my standard def independence day. Question i have though is, on the standard version theres some extra footage that wasn't in the theatrical cut, nothing major just a few extra scenes that pad the story out a little and imrpove it a bit. But i was wondering are the extra bits on the blu ray as well? can't seem to find an answer elsewhere so if anyone else has it and knows the bits i mean then thanks. {Ed001's Note - normally the blu ray will have all the stuff the DVD does, usually with more extras if anything.}

Thanks ed {Ed001's Note - sometimes the cheap versions will have less, but yours wasn't a special edition or extended cut or anything, so it should have it all on the standard versions.}
