I see a lot of fanfare is coming in for The Revenant already,with people saying Leo will get an Oscar. I think this is the problem with modern cinema.
People are clamouring that performances are great before movies are even released,and then they're disappointed when some one doesn't win.

I have never once seen an oscar worthy performance from Leo who just plays it safe and raises his voice every now and then in a film. I'll watch the film,but I don't expect it to blow my socks off,frontiersmen films rarely do.

01 Oct 2015 23:37:21
I disagree, some of Leo's film performances have most definately warranted an Oscar, he as IMO the best actor never to win an Oscar.

04 Oct 2015 16:26:00
Can't say I agree. I just don't see it in his performances. i think there are also a lot of much better actors never to win oscars. Oldman,Jackman,Rickman etc. Personally I find Leo a bit like Cruise. just vanilla in his performances. I;ve never seen anything that's made me step back and think wow,that must have taken a lot to enter that character and understand what's required in the performance. The closest to it I saw was his preformance in wolf of wallstreet with the qualudes.

{Ed007's Note - Have you seen The Basketball Diaries?}

05 Oct 2015 10:32:07
Yes ed.

{Ed007's Note - And you didn't think Di Caprio played a good part in that? I'm not a great fan of his but to say he's like Tom Cruise or that he doesn't put everything into his roles is a bit much. I also thought he put in great performances in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Departed, Gangs of New York and The Great Gatsby.}

06 Oct 2015 10:03:08
I hated his performance in Gangs of New York. I thought that casting was horrible personally. I never saw anything in the departed that made me think wow,that's oscar worthy. I just always feel his roles are vanilla,using the same techniques he's always used.titled head to be inquisitive,closing eyes,to show distrust,speaking lightly and moving his head from side to side to show caution etc,these are all competent acting skills,but just none I've ever been blown away by I've never really gotten emotionally involved in his characters he just doesn't bring that to the table for me personally.

08 Oct 2015 06:59:00
A couple more of his films I like:
Blood Diamond - I really liked this one.
Django - Bit crazy but he played a great part.

{Ed001's Note - he was excellent in Blood Diamond.}

28 Sep 2015 18:37:56
Whilst we are on the subject of foreign films has anybody ever seen the French film scorpion

22 Sep 2015 21:20:39
Noticed the tread about red dawn further down and was wondering have Amy of you seen tomorrow when the war began its sort of a remake of the original but it's Australian and so much better than the new American remake

23 Sep 2015 14:31:13
Not seen that Johny. I'll check it out when I get time

23 Sep 2015 16:30:30
I personally think ozzy film making is brilliant

{Ed001's Note - only ozzy film I can think of is Mad Max, the original one. What other ones are there mate? Mad Max is a classic, unlike the remake.}

24 Sep 2015 20:19:28
I don't know what's considered necessary to make a movie Australian,but I liked Gallipopi,Chopper was pretty good,I lovedthe crocodile dundees when I was younger. My mother loved Muriels wedding,though I hated it,I think wolf creek was ok but nothing special. Thos movies spring to the top of my head

{Ed001's Note - I never even thought of them as Aussie movies. I remember sneaking in to the cinema to see the first Croc Dundee.}

25 Sep 2015 02:27:21
Wrong Turn is Australian I think, it's a horror movie though.

{Ed001's Note - never heard of it sorry.}

25 Sep 2015 08:55:18
Try wormwood it's a zombie film but the ozzies just make it good am not usually a fan of zombies unless it's the walking dead but a friend recommended wormwood and I really enjoyed it

{Ed001's Note - I actually quite like zombie movies as my daughter loves them.}

25 Sep 2015 22:03:41
What's the one peter Jackson did? Before he found cgi and had no one to keep him to a sensible length.

25 Sep 2015 21:06:42
Give wormwood a try then ed it's good mate

{Ed001's Note - ok mate I will have a look for it.}

26 Sep 2015 10:56:38
Brain dead I think it is called mort is that the one I mean mate

26 Sep 2015 14:22:20
Is that the one where he's using the lawn mower in the mansion? Because that one was just hilarious.

26 Sep 2015 22:15:02
Yes that's it with the martial arts priest.

{Ed007's Note - On the subject of Aussie films have you guys seen Romper Stomper (1992) with a young Russel Crowe about a racist anti-Asian gang? There's also a New Zealand made film called Once Were Warriors (1994) about a gang of tough as coffin nails Maoris, it stars Temuera Morrison who went onto play Boba Fett's father, as well as the father of ALL Stormtroopers, Jango Fett in the Star Wars prequels.
Be warned though they are a bit gritty and fully deserve their 18 rating.}

27 Sep 2015 21:03:33
Both brilliant films eds once were warriors is a classic

{Ed007's Note - Definitely, Johny and it would surprise you the amount of people who haven't seen it.}

28 Sep 2015 13:26:27
To be honest ed I havnt seen it in years I watched it when I was bout 15/16 in my cousins house, I think am going to have to find it and give it another watch mate, anyone who hasn't seen it give it a go

{Ed007's Note - I recently bought one of those T8 android boxes and any film you want seems to be on that. I've had it 2 weeks and is one of the best £110 I've ever spent.}

28 Sep 2015 18:11:39
Where did you get that ed eBay?

{Ed007's Note - No mate, I think there's a new V.3 version just out that I missed by a couple of weeks but here's the one I bought:

https://goo.gl/4yNmcY

After looking into it, talking to folk and dithering for weeks I decided that was the best for me personally and me and my Mrs are delighted with it. A quick Google search and following the right people on social media and I was in about it like a tramp eating chips.}

28 Sep 2015 18:28:37
Nice one ed

{Ed007's Note - I regret not having bought one ages ago.}

16 Sep 2015 12:34:18
Spoke of Ridley Scott in an earlier thread. Has anyone here much interest in his new one "The Martian".

I'm hopeful rather than expectant. After his first few, which i consider classics all and maybe Gladiator, he's been more miss than hit for me.

19 Sep 2015 16:00:37
Almost every movie I've ever seen involving mars has been an utter failure.
They're constantly the same,trapped on a planet needing to survive. I think around 2000 it was redplanet and mission to mars. We'll see. There will need to be 1 or 2 subplots for me to make his interesting. I know the book had a decent review from most readers.

25 Sep 2015 22:00:57
Total recall. The proper one.

09 Sep 2015 11:11:23
BTW I am a happy man today as it's now been confirmed stargate will get a reboot.

Originally it was slated for a trilogy,but the owners to the rights sold it on to tv studios as they worried for the films success after completion. As it turned it out,it did great at the box office, and the tv series the studio spawned afterwards went on to become the second longest sci fi series after dr who in terms of series,and up there in episodes too
Im glad it's finally getting the trilogy it was slated for,I just hope the moviegoers are still interested in a new type of sci fi. But given the star trek and starwars reboots and continuationI;m hoping more people will be interested
On another note. Filming starts on the enw red dwarf series too (my avater) LOVED it as a child

{Ed001's Note - I am not a big fan of Stargate, the series was awful in my opinion, but it was an interesting idea, so could be good if done right.

Who is in the new Red Dwarf? I loved that years ago, though Craig Charles is a proper bell, it worked well that show.}

09 Sep 2015 11:26:22
Very one is back I think,Robert Lewellyn,Danny J Jules,Chris Barrie and Craig Charles. I absolutely loved the show,did so well on such a small budget,and focused on the writing and character interaction. It came back 2 years ago for season 10 when Dave(tv station) picked it up,it still has grant and naylor at the helm which bodes well. I did however believe it missed holly the AI dearly even though he sporaically appeared during episodes the delivery and script was always on point.

What make you say that about Craig Charles,I've never really heard much about him ,then again I've never really looked for any dirt

{Ed001's Note - I never knew that it came back on Dave. I missed that. Just he is a bit of a knob mate, as a person. Or at least that is how he always came across in person. He was good in Red Dwarf though.}

09 Sep 2015 12:31:06
Type in red dwarf x 10 on youtube Ed001 and the season will pop up

{Ed001's Note - cheers mate will do that when I get some spare time.}

25 Sep 2015 02:29:34
Red Dwarf, yay!

25 Sep 2015 21:59:15
Not seen series 10, was it better than that blade runner tribute film they did?

26 Sep 2015 14:25:22
Yeah much better Mort. They reintroduced the canned laughter and the comedy its self is much better. They still keep the same tacky costumes and props which is great and aside from receding hairlines, they don't look any different.

26 Sep 2015 22:18:27
Well nothing we can do on hairlines. I remember I was at college when series 8 finally came out an I wondered where time had gone. Now were talking series 10.

07 Sep 2015 18:18:53
I'm happy to see some activity on this page now. I tried months ago and it was pretty dead, so in the hope of helping continue that. any recommendations for great comedies?

My all timer is probably Midnight Run, De Niro absolutely brilliant playing it so straight, opposite Charles Grodin as the always irritating "the duke".

{Ed001's Note - what sort of age are you talking? I mean the age of the film, not your mental age, as you are able to type in complete sentences so it clearly rules out Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler movies.....}

07 Sep 2015 19:07:46
In recent times the one comedy I enjoyed was kingsman secret service.

{Ed001's Note - I haven't seen that yet.}

07 Sep 2015 23:38:11
Nice one Ed, just about got the hang of those complete sentences! Not too bothered about age really if you think it's a recommend, i'd be curious to hear. And agreed on Sandler, i'm still waiting for his next decent one to follow up Happy Gilmore! That must be 20 odd years ago.

And Reet, Kingsmen was good fun. Sam L does a good turn as usual.

{Ed001's Note - I have always said Happy Gilmore was the only good film he made, the rest are just repeats of it. I honestly can't think of a good comedy I have seen recently.}

09 Sep 2015 10:42:41
I think your sense of humour will ultimately decide this. I liked horrible bosses (both films),Super troopers is always one of my favourite comedy capers,but if you don't like comedy surrounding actionas and stupidity you won't like it ,(it's what i like to think of as Laurel and hardy for the modern age)
Even though the film was pretty average I thought the change up had some brilliantly timed jokes and sequences that had me in stitches.

One of the alternatives I would suggest too,as a mockery would be Kung Pow fists of Fury it's a bit left field and out there,but the writing and use of old film is brilliant.

{Ed001's Note - I agree on Horrible Bosses, I like both of those.}

09 Sep 2015 10:45:12
Oh and I forgot to add anything at the moment with Paul Rudd in seems to be a hit. He's the bankable deadpan one liner that comedy writers love,hence why I think he was picked for Ant Man
This is 40
I love you man
Dinner for Schmucks
Role Models

25 Sep 2015 21:56:18
I think most modern comedy films are shocking. Trying to think of anything I've seen in the last decade I've liked.

{Ed013's Note - I enjoyed Dumb and Dumber 2, but maybe im just dumb ;-)

26 Sep 2015 10:57:41
You can't beat Ted the first one

{Ed001's Note - the talking teddy one? That was truly awful I thought.}

26 Sep 2015 14:28:18
Ted had its moments where I did genuinely laugh, like the whole "sheep on the carpet" scene, I thought that was funny.

06 Sep 2015 07:26:57
I have just watched the two Red Dawn films, one yesterday and one this morning. I had never seen either before so thought I would give them a go. I wish I hadn't bothered! Utter and complete jingoistic garbage. Amongst the worst films I have ever had the misfortune to see.

06 Sep 2015 11:09:10
Cant say I've heard of them. What's it about?

{Ed001's Note - USA being invaded. Think Invasion USA, but instead of Chuck Norris saving the day, it is a bunch of really annoying teenagers that take on the entire Russian/Korean armies. The original one is only enjoyable for the moments when some of them die, because they truly are a bunch of pricks. It is a reminder of just what a bell Charlie Sheen was even as a kid.}

06 Sep 2015 12:07:00
One where you cheer the bad guys then.

{Ed001's Note - defo.}

06 Sep 2015 17:30:36
Are all teenagers really annoying or is it just movie ones? Its like those teen hacker slasher films as well.

{Ed001's Note - judging by my daughter, all teenagers! Just kidding I am sure there are some nice ones out there, but they are all annoying in films.}

07 Sep 2015 18:13:38
You have a living specimen of a nice teenager right herw ed.

{Ed001's Note - where??????}

07 Sep 2015 19:05:40
1937 kilometres eeastof you. There lies a Liverpool fan with wisdom far beyond his age, someone created to rule over theminions surrounding him 😂

{Ed001's Note - hmmmm no idea who that could be, maybe you should get him posting on the sites Reet, he would be a big improvement on the nutters we normally get!}

08 Sep 2015 01:50:58
Well what do you expect? You have this nutter from dubai overseeing all.This wierd old ugly fat guy with a neo scouse accent. I think he is the source of troubles don't you think? 😂😂

{Ed001's Note - that is a bit harsh, Ed033 has gone back to England anyway so it can't be him....}

09 Sep 2015 10:49:24
I haven't watched the old red dawn,I have seen the new one,I thought it was terrible. I mean the entire premise of the film is shocking but the resistance is quite funny,that 20 kids can outlast 3 navy seals and get the jump on them. I think it was remade to take advantage of 1) Chris Hemsworth's marketability 2)the freedom fighter film movement after hunger games

{Ed001's Note - the old one is worse than the new one.}

05 Sep 2015 16:31:17
Ed1 can I ask who your favourite actresses are? Talent or looks.

{Ed001's Note - looks would have been Tia Carrere a few years ago, no idea what she looks like now though. Talent, erm. I really can't think of any that stand out in terms of talent, the roles they get tend to be crap and emphasis their looks.}

06 Sep 2015 11:11:21
There does seem to be a lack of good actresses around compared to actors.

Talent wise cate blanchett is good. Helen Mirren too.

{Ed001's Note - Helen Mirren is good, that is a good point, she really can act. Not sure I have a clue who Cate Blanchett is though.}

06 Sep 2015 12:10:30
Played Elizabeth in the Elizabeth films. Galadriel in hobbit/ lord of the rings. Usually doesn't do blockbusters' and has done some good less well known films. Always puts in a good performance rather than going through the motions like some.

Helen Mirren is ace. Could teach these kids a thing or three.

{Ed001's Note - I don't remember her, not seen Elizabeth nor the Hobbit films and LOTR were awful so I have erased them from my mind.}

06 Sep 2015 12:15:12
Here we are:
Picture of Tia Carrere
http://goo.gl/lqzrw8

{Ed001's Note - an old one that, she is getting on now.}

06 Sep 2015 14:05:23
She was one of the best things in lord of the rings. Some good actors just not well produced.

She did a good low budget film based on SOE where she was sent to France to help the resistance.

{Ed001's Note - I think not well produced is an understatement!

What film was that?}

06 Sep 2015 15:09:18
Charlotte Gray. Pretty decent.

{Ed002's Note - And of course Daria Halpin.}

06 Sep 2015 17:32:57
Bit before my time that one.

{Ed002's Note - Doria will be younger that Helen Mirren I would think. Doria is still in great shape - as is her astonishing mother, Anna Halprin, who is still teaching dance well in to her 90s.}

07 Sep 2015 18:09:04
Aw c'mon Ed01, so much hate for LOTR! I genuinely think they're decent movies and were a real achievement in film-making.

The Hobbit films are another matter sadly. Complete drivel.

{Ed001's Note - I just found them all complete drivel mate.}

09 Sep 2015 10:57:00
I really like Dame Judi as an actress,Susan Sarandon and Hilary Swank,kathy batess (my fave),and Olivia Munn is probably my favourite younger actress.

In terms of looks I got to go for Munn again,Alic Eve,Olivia Wilde

03 Sep 2015 09:07:47
I went along to see a 4D movie the other day, for a break from the transfer window. Ended up seeing Mission Impossible because that was the film showing. I literally have no idea what happened in the film because I spent most of it giggling as the seat threw me about, sprayed me with water, spewed smoke or punched me in the back! Really good laugh, but it does not in any way improve the experience of watching a film. Really expensive too. Mind, from what I have heard about the film, it is probably the only way it will be enjoyable. It was a good experience, good fun, but not something I would do again, unless it was cheap.

04 Sep 2015 07:03:56
3D is good enough for me. I have experienced 4d and when i came out i made a pact to never waste money on that again

{Ed001's Note - it is only good for making a crap movie into a laugh. It is far too expensive to be worth bothering with. Plus it ruins the film as a film, you miss half of it.}

05 Sep 2015 11:53:58
Don't like 3d so won't be wasting time on that

{Ed001's Note - so I am not the only one that thinks 3D is just a gimmick and makes the films worse then?}

05 Sep 2015 14:22:07
Well I wear glasses so find it really awkward anyway. But i'd agree that it was a gimmick. What does it actually add to a film? If you need that to get an audience into the film then how good is your film to begin with.

{Ed001's Note - I agree with them being awkward when you wear glasses, that is a major issue, they never sit comfortably, but if the film is good you forget about them. The problem is that they very rarely are good, they are usually too busy trying to shoehorn objects flying out of the screen at you etc to make a good story. It just seems forced, rather than natural.}

05 Sep 2015 16:25:11
Yep definitely agree there. Its all on effects than the film.

07 Sep 2015 18:12:17
I think it varies from person to person. I also wear glasses. But i had ordered custom 3d glasses online wit a power so basically it's spectacles in 3d 😝
