Hi guys

Just curious to see if anyone has opinions on "Dunkirk" yet. I went to it yesterday with fairly high expectations. Mostly because i know a Nolan film is going to look brilliant if nothing else and i'd heard plenty of hype.

I found it a letdown honestly. It was fantastic to look at and that's mostly where it ended for me. Its structure is maybe where i struggled in that basically there's no narrative, only the event itself seen from 3 different perspectives. The characters had little depth for me.

I've no doubt that it is that way for a reason but it just didn't work for me as a film should. Anyway, just a few thoughts.

{Ed001's Note - interesting review that, I was tempted to go and see it but I might wait until it hits TV now.}

I haven't seen it yet but really want to I've heard nothing but great reviews so far only thing putting me off is harry styles is in it (surely it's a cameo)

{Ed001's Note - who is Harry Styles?}

2.) 06 Aug 2017 07:03:27
From the pop group one direction

{Ed001's Note - oh ok, no idea sorry.}

3.) 06 Aug 2017 21:40:38
Believe it or not, he's actually pretty good in the film. Certainly not a hindrance anyway! And ed, probably best to see it big screen if at all. Not really a big war film fan so maybe it's just not for me.

{Ed001's Note - I could just sit really close to the TV?}

4.) 08 Aug 2017 05:19:16
Haha. Yeah. Like those kids.

{Ed001's Note - I was one of those kids when I was young. Before you say it, yes it was a long time ago!}

I think Nolan has done a great job with Dunkirk. The film conveys the relentless bomardment those guys endured incredibly well. I found it tiresome watching. It was a bombardment on the viewers sense's. The music score was gritty and draining. It was never ending. Again trying to convey that message of ceaseless bombardment. Visually the film was stunning. Some scenes were just incredible, especially in the air. Historically the film wasn't too bad either and was pritty accurate.

On the whole I think it's a fantastic film which does the men of Dunkirk justice. It doesn't let up and it try's to put you on that beach with them. What I liked most was the sense of foreboding of what was to come next which historically is spot on. The war for us had just begun. I'd definitely recommend the film but as with all Nolan works don't expect the norm.

Spoke of Ridley Scott in an earlier thread. Has anyone here much interest in his new one "The Martian".

I'm hopeful rather than expectant. After his first few, which i consider classics all and maybe Gladiator, he's been more miss than hit for me.

Almost every movie I've ever seen involving mars has been an utter failure.
They're constantly the same,trapped on a planet needing to survive. I think around 2000 it was redplanet and mission to mars. We'll see. There will need to be 1 or 2 subplots for me to make his interesting. I know the book had a decent review from most readers.

Total recall. The proper one.

I'm happy to see some activity on this page now. I tried months ago and it was pretty dead, so in the hope of helping continue that. any recommendations for great comedies?

My all timer is probably Midnight Run, De Niro absolutely brilliant playing it so straight, opposite Charles Grodin as the always irritating "the duke".

{Ed001's Note - what sort of age are you talking? I mean the age of the film, not your mental age, as you are able to type in complete sentences so it clearly rules out Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler movies.....}

1.) 07 Sep 2015 19:07:46
In recent times the one comedy I enjoyed was kingsman secret service.

{Ed001's Note - I haven't seen that yet.}

2.) 07 Sep 2015 23:38:11
Nice one Ed, just about got the hang of those complete sentences! Not too bothered about age really if you think it's a recommend, i'd be curious to hear. And agreed on Sandler, i'm still waiting for his next decent one to follow up Happy Gilmore! That must be 20 odd years ago.

And Reet, Kingsmen was good fun. Sam L does a good turn as usual.

{Ed001's Note - I have always said Happy Gilmore was the only good film he made, the rest are just repeats of it. I honestly can't think of a good comedy I have seen recently.}

I think your sense of humour will ultimately decide this. I liked horrible bosses (both films),Super troopers is always one of my favourite comedy capers,but if you don't like comedy surrounding actionas and stupidity you won't like it ,(it's what i like to think of as Laurel and hardy for the modern age)
Even though the film was pretty average I thought the change up had some brilliantly timed jokes and sequences that had me in stitches.

One of the alternatives I would suggest too,as a mockery would be Kung Pow fists of Fury it's a bit left field and out there,but the writing and use of old film is brilliant.

{Ed001's Note - I agree on Horrible Bosses, I like both of those.}

4.) 09 Sep 2015 10:45:12
Oh and I forgot to add anything at the moment with Paul Rudd in seems to be a hit. He's the bankable deadpan one liner that comedy writers love,hence why I think he was picked for Ant Man
This is 40
I love you man
Dinner for Schmucks
Role Models

5.) 25 Sep 2015 21:56:18
I think most modern comedy films are shocking. Trying to think of anything I've seen in the last decade I've liked.

{Ed013's Note - I enjoyed Dumb and Dumber 2, but maybe im just dumb ;-)

6.) 26 Sep 2015 10:57:41
You can't beat Ted the first one

{Ed001's Note - the talking teddy one? That was truly awful I thought.}

7.) 26 Sep 2015 14:28:18
Ted had its moments where I did genuinely laugh, like the whole "sheep on the carpet" scene, I thought that was funny.

Hi ed01

I'm rather like yourself in holding the original in high regard. I'll generally say it is my favourite film but there are so many to be fair.

I went to this and couldn't help having certain expectations and came away disappointed for the most part. I have liked all of Villeneuve's other films and felt certain that Blade Runner was in safe hands with him.

So i thought about it for a couple of days and i wondered why i didn't feel like i loved this one and why i do love the original. The visuals and the music as well as the performances make that a special film. I think this film has two of those things but the Vangelis score in the original is like another amazing character to enjoy in almost every scene. The new one just doesn't have that, in fact it seems to have quite a lot of industrial screeches and groans as score which bothered me a bit.

Anyway, i went back a second time yesterday. Honestly, i enjoyed it more on that occasion simply because i wasn't holding it next to the original in the same way and i could take in the story a little better.

It is an absolute spectacle of a film, i mean it's gorgeous to look at albeit you have to look at it for quite a long time! No doubt it's too long and some of the plot seems a bit confused and over-elaborate but i'm glad i went back and just saw something i enjoyed for itself, rather than just think of it as a disappointing follow-up.

The end of the film makes their plan clear however, and that bothers me! Anyway, sorry for the long post. I enjoyed thinking about this one and revisiting Ridley Scott's masterpiece.

{Ed001's Note - interesting it is better on 2nd viewing, that is something I will never find out because there is no way I would sit through that again!}

Alright Deano

If that's the type of film your into, i'd recommend The Hunt with Mads Mikkelson, a danish film. It's a fairly raw watch but it really got me thinking. Brilliant performances.

Hey lads, as always late to the thread for me.

Creed is well worth the watch and sly is ok but he's just himself. If that's worth an oscar nom now, that's a terrible and really sentimental choice!

CanIbeTheKing

{Ed001's Note - that pretty much does win oscars these days. They do not have to do the role right, just have the right role.}
