How are people thinking the new alien movie may go?
The first 2 are in my top 20 films. Especially the second. My nan let me watch it when I was 8!! And I was HOOKED.
I'm a bit worried with Neil Blomkamp in charge,but excited too. I thought Elysium was good I LOVED district 9.Not seen Chappie yet.

He does sci fi very well,and brings with him Shalto Copely who I really think is a brilliant actor. What worries me though is that his films all follow the same path,Worker works for organisation that's evil,good guy just doing their job,stumble across something,get infected/new tech,fight against evil organisation in a 1vs company battle to stop evil company using technology as a weapon.

Know Weylan Yutani having already been the company looking for a bio weapon in pretty much every film,I'd like it to step away from this a little,no doubt Blomkamp can do a brilliant job ,but it would just either be a rehash of every single film in the series.

I hear they are going to reboot it from the aliens film and just forget alien 3 and resurrection.They're looking to get thee writers from the alien isolation game involved too whose storyline got great gaming reviews and looked genuinely scary when I watched clips online.

I hope we can relight the Alien series after the failure of Prmoetheus.

Sorry for such a long post again.

{Ed001's Note - I loved the first and second one, so I really hope they can return to that level and forget the dross of the AvP movies entirely. I am worried it will turn out as you said though.}

28 Aug 2015 23:37:35
I enjoyed Prometheus. i'd like to see where that goes.

{Ed001's Note - did you not find it long, slow and quite boring? It was hours of tedium and then a few minutes of action, at least that was how it felt.}

05 Sep 2015 11:56:46
It was a slow build up and I think some ideas weren't fully developed, just seemed like they started something then moved on so i'd like to see if a sequel develops it.

Also charlize theron always good to look at and fassbender and idriss elba are good actors.

{Ed001's Note - I am not a fan of Theron, she does nothing for me at all, and is not a particularly good actress either. I think the word slow is the one that best sums up Prometheus though.}

05 Sep 2015 14:23:58
It is slow. But I don't mind that. Sometimes films are in too much of a rush to get to the big set piece action scenes that the story doesn't make sense. The first alien film was quite slow at the start.

{Ed001's Note - true, but the first Alien was a fantastic film, Prometheus just seemed an attempt to be clever to me. It wasn't giving too much detail, some bits can be left to the imagination. I think it just went too far the other way from the rushed jobs.}

05 Sep 2015 16:26:12
Yeah i'd agree with all that. I've sat through worse though.

07 Sep 2015 17:28:39
Hey lads, nice to see some familiar names from the Liverpool site on here.

About Prometheus, i kinda liked it but i could see where some of the bad press came from. I'm a big fan of the first two also but i think so many people are that the hype was just too much to live up to. Just saw Boba mention the Blomkamp film. is Ridley making the follow up to Prom?

10 Sep 2015 22:21:44
Ridley is meant to be getting it penned with other writers atm, but it won't have any baring on the blomkamp film I think they're just going their own ways,as neither film should ultimately affect the others timeline.You'd think they'd follow it up with (Elizabeth shaw?the noomi repace character reaching the engineers planet or something)

16 Sep 2015 12:29:23
Boba

Very late reply! Yeah i am hopeful that the follow up to Prometheus could be a better film continuing her story. Also glad that there's going to be another offshoot to the alien universe with Blomkamp. More chances to get another classic movie!

I really enjoy talking movies, and like thise site,because quite frankly on IMDB their board is full of trolls and people simply trying to point out ''plotholes'' trying to be clever.

That said I thought i'd start a new topic.

What films have you watched where you've maybe bought the dvd/vhs on a whim and been blown away by?

For me there are a few that I didn't expect much from but was truly entertained by.

Gattaca -The entire storyline was brilliant and one i feel current research programmes may prove to be forsightfulI think Jude Law was particularly good too

The man from earth-Id didn't even remember buying this from fhm about 6 years ago,it lay in my collection still wrapped till about a year ago,I watched it,and the philosophical side and dialogue was truly brilliant (adapted from a play) but it really opened my mind as to how debating works with pros and cons.(a film i highly recommend)

King's speech-Bit of an obvious choice for such a well known movie,but for me it surpassed my expectations,I got massively engrossed in the story and relationship that developed a lot more than I anticipated. I expected the usual folly from an oscar winner,over acted, over written,heavy emphasis on musical scores. But the story line felt focused and captivating.

{Ed001's Note - those are 3 films I have yet to watch. In the case of Man From Earth, I have never even heard of it. The one that blew me away was Ong Bak, I had no idea what it was and saw it and just loved it. Tony Jaa was just incredible in that film, shame he is now being wasted in crappy Western films as a bad guy. He is much better as the force of nature that destroys everything in his path to save the day.}

16 Aug 2015 19:55:40
I can't believe i put fhm insted of hmv haha! you know what ed001 I have ong bak in that collection and am yet to watch it. A friend gave me his collection before leaving for Dubai He loved it,I'll certainly have to give it a go.

The 1 that truly blew me away for dialogue and pholosophy was the man from earth. It'll be hit and miss with people.which i understand.But if you ever get a chance,i'd give it a view.

{Ed001's Note - I absolutely love Ong Bak, but I love martial arts films. As for Man From Earth, I will look out for it.}

17 Aug 2015 22:03:50
Ed001 I completely agree ong bak is brilliant love stuff like that. I didn't realise Tony jaa was being used in westerns shame his talent is being wasted.

Have you seen the raid 1/2 ed?

They are very good films with excellent martial art scenes. A kitchen fight in the raid 2 leaves you speechless (best fight scene I've seen in any movie)

{Ed001's Note - I meant Western films, not Westerns the genre, sorry. Left out a crucial word for that to make sense there. I love Raid 1, Raid 2 was excellent, but not quite as good as the first one in my opinion. Though that is more because the first one was just so good that the second one was never going to be able to live up to it.}

23 Aug 2015 14:41:19
Imdb is great for looking up stuff, like the name of that actor you recognise, you've seen him in loads of films but can never remember the name. But the forums are full of cocks.

{Ed001's Note - I have never looked on their forums, but it is useful for looking up what film that actor you are now watching was in you watched in the past.}

27 Aug 2015 18:25:09
Yes and I've found other films to go and watch because of that.

There's always some bloke who you go o look its so and so again. Like the other night was watching red2.(don't it wasn't my choice), but this guy looked really familiar turns out he was in band of brothers.

And there's this German guy, in about every war film of the 60s and 70s can never remember his name.

Its also good for looking up quotes from films and the trivia section is usually full of interesting little known facts. Good way to kill time.

But the forums. Yeah. Makes the football boards look reasonable. I think ed2 would be opening cans of whupass on an hourly basis.

{Ed001's Note - that would be good to see!}

05 Sep 2015 11:57:43
Some forums have interesting discussions especially the war films. Avoid anything science fiction based.

07 Sep 2015 17:37:03
Just going back to Boba's earlier post, i've never even heard of The Man from Earth, so that's one for my list. Thanks mate!

When i checked it on imdb, it threw up another couple of old favourites, K-Pax and Moon. Deus Ex Machina is a newer one i'd recommend along the lines of thoughtful sci-fi.

10 Sep 2015 22:25:37
I;ve been meaning to watch Ex Machina,Moon was truly amazing. I personally would have preferred an ending for him not to get to earth though.(my sadistic side coming out there maybe?) Kpax Is very much underappreciated for me guys seem to like it,girls seem to hate it.

15 Aug 2015 08:26:54
I have to be honest, I was not impressed with Mad Max: Fury Road at all. It was ok, but nothing special, which is a disappointment for me.

15 Aug 2015 21:49:30
I haven't even watched the original mad max movies, I got the recent 1 on dvd pre order. I know the original is meant to be amazing. But I feel watching it 20+ years later will see it not stand the test of time for a low budget movie.
What would you say ed001?(try to leave nostalgia aside ) :)

{Ed001's Note - I don't know mate, it is going to look extremely dated, but the first one I feel would still stand the test of time. It is 2 and 3 I would not want to recommend, though 3 stood the test well enough for Tupac and Dre to use it as the basis of the California Love video. I am torn. They are very much of their time, but even then they were oddities. I think the first one is a must watch though. One of those films that has stood out in my lifetime. A classic. So I would advise you to watch it, even at the risk of it being dated and looking completely out of touch.}

16 Aug 2015 18:14:08
Sweet,I will watch the 1st one then and keep an open mind about it. I tend to find when I watch movies in classics decades after their release. I just am not a fan.
Some examples of films that are myths for me are:
Mulholland drive.
Requiem for dream
schindlers list
(the big one). GODFATHER.

I have enjoyed a lot of golden oldies though. alien,rainman,raging bull etc

{Ed001's Note - have to admit I don't like those 4 either, bored me to tears all four of them, but I did love the Alien films. Rainman wasn't really my thing and I have never got round to watching Raging Bull.}

17 Aug 2015 22:09:46
Ed we discussed this a while back as I said I thought it was terrible.

I said I felt they seemed to remake mad max 2 instead of the first one which by a mile was the better one.

I also said very little action happened which was a disappointment.

I can imagine it took Tom hardy long to learn his lines as he only said about 20 words.

{Ed001's Note - it just felt like Max was an extra, rather than a main character. There were some very good things about it, but overall it dragged on and had little real action, as there were too many gaps in it waiting for it to happen. I know that is meant to build anticipation, but I didn't feel it worked for me.}

07 Sep 2015 17:42:51
Controversial stuff there, mm1 better than mm2. I'm a fan of both but i'd still have 2 shading it. I really should love the new one because it feels like 2 but it just seemed a bit flat. Amazing looking but not much story to hook you in.

10 Aug 2015 19:44:21
Just wondering, what are people's thoughts on the upcoming Deadpool movie?

I've never been a great comic book fan, apart from Deadpool, who I just find great.

Ryan Reynolds is apparently a fan of the character and has put a lot of work into him, plus I read the directors are going along the Guardians of the Galaxy route, where it's got a good balance of action and humour.

Deadpool, even in the comics has always been pretty funny, always breaking the fourth wall, addressing the reader and writers directly, even going as far to acknowledge he's a fictional character.

I've got high hopes for this one and the trailer has done nothing but reinforce that!

{Ed001's Note - I have to be honest, I know nothing about Deadpool, nor even know who it is!}

11 Aug 2015 09:18:31
Just a quick background for you Ed!

If you've seen the Wolverine film, where He and Sabertooth fight the other mutant on that cooling tower, well the other mutant was Deadpool.
A terrible, terrible version of Deadpool.

Ryan Reynolds took the chance to do the new one, because he's a fan of the character and wants it done right!

There are so many Deadpool origin stories, but because the character is actually slightly insane, he can't remember his backstory anyway, so they just piece it together!

The most common one Is as follows;

Deadpool is a former special forces solider named Wade Wilson (that's what they think, in one story, an enemy of his shows up and says that HE'S Wade Wilson and Deadpool just beat him up and took his name) he gets put into an experiment to cure him of his cancer, the experiment is called project X and gives him superhuman regeneration, he's also now immune to all diseases and illness.
But the regeneration means that no cells can die, so whilst his healthy cells live, the cancerous ones do too and leave him looking horribly scarred.
He already has his military training, but the project enhances his agility and ability to fight with swords, plus it boosts his marksman quality.

His main story was getting revenge on the people who experimented on him, because even though he agreed to do it, they lied about the effects.
Deadpool is basically impossible to kill now, he can literally be decapitated and as long as the head is near the body, it will re-attach.
In one book, Hulk smashes his head into a pulp and he regrows it.

The comics have always been full of action, but there's a lot of dark humour there.
He's one of the only characters to of broken the fourth wall and in fact the only one to do it almost every episode.
There's a spin off series where in an attempt to kill himself, he comes out of the books and tries to kill the Marvel writers, so they'll stop writing his story and thus let him die.

When he fights enemies from a different comic, sometimes he'll start reading their comic books, so he knows how they fight and can beat them.

He knows he's a fictional character and uses that to work for him.

In one comic, a master martial artist who has an eclectic memory and can copy any opponents fighting style, loses a fight to Deadpool, he says that because Deadpool is so insane, he doesn't fight normally, he just makes it up as he goes along, which makes him impossible to mimic.

He started off as a villain, but due to fans loving him, became an anti-hero and has gone from strength to strength since then.

Should be a great film!

{Ed001's Note - that does sound like a good film. Might need to be a bit darker than the usual Marvel stuff though, to really work well.}

11 Aug 2015 09:23:24
I wasn't a fan of deadpool. I just think the gimmick is a bit lame that he realises he's a comic book character,and takes away from any sort of story plot when I've read the comics,as there is almost too much concentration on his deadpan,and breaking the 4th wall.

That said I am interested to see how it plays out on the big screen. Origins wolverine was not a great debut for the character (terrible film),I am fearful the same as I am in any Ryan Reynold movie that isn't a comedy/serious movie,that there will be too much focus on being stupid and funny,than developing a plot. (see blade 3,green lantern). Either use him seriously or comically (Buried,smokin' aces, safe house,change up) but not both

01 Aug 2015 16:34:07
What's people thoughts on the forthcoming Ghostbusters film?

03 Aug 2015 09:34:09
I am not a fan of female comedy capers. I know that might sound sexist,but I just don't laugh at stuff like the heat,bridesmaids,the other woman etc. I think there's an over reliance on traditional slapstick stupidness rather than genuinely funny lines in a script.

I can't see the need to reboot it as all female. Like the calls for spiderman to be black a few years ago. All seems stupid to me.

Harold Ramis input might be sorely missed too. I will wait till I hear the general public consensus before seeing it. I'll likely wait for the dvd or something

03 Aug 2015 21:53:23
Yeah I don't get the need to have all of them female. 1 or 2 fine but all of them its just pandering to feminism or a gimmick.

{Ed001's Note - it does feel like a gimmick, especially as they are not funny women either, that Melissa McCarthy is the least funny woman on earth. What they should have done is found the funniest group of people that worked well together naturally, bouncing off each other. Whether they were male or female should be irrelevant.}

04 Aug 2015 21:43:23
True ed, if your good enough your good enough, sex or race doesn't come into it. To be honest I'm struggling to think of any comedy actresses I like.

{Ed001's Note - I honestly can't think of one either, but is that just because they don't get the roles, rather than they aren't out there?}

05 Aug 2015 12:17:33
^^^ agreed I can't think of one female orientated comedy I've laughed my belly at.

Mentioning about great comedy with people bouncing off each other. The cast of super troopers seemed the gel brilliantly. Even to the point,they've managed to fund a new movie from a go fund me page. and raised something like $4.5 million I thought they could possibly do Ghostbusters justice.

I do wonder whether they will try to make ghostbusters a comedy orientated film with a dark feel,or a fantasy/scary film,with comical scenes.
