Right people I'm planning on watching these over the weekend unless some of you can save me 2hrs of shite if you've already seen any of them.

The Mummy - new one
Wonder Woman
Alien - new one
Transformers - new one

discountdave

{Ed001's Note - I haven't seen Alien but have the others and would not recommend any of them. WW is the best of them and I found that a bit meh at best.}

1.) 13 Jul 2017 12:47:35
bloody hell ed got to search for something else now otherwise I'll be bored out my mind.

Alien was the one I was trying to avoid I just know it will have nothing on the first 2 films.

The mummy I expected to be crap so thanks for clearing that up.

Wonder Woman I've had mixed reviews on that

Transformers I was quite looking forward too

Oh well bit of gardening instead then 😂

{Ed001's Note - you can come and do my garden if you like mate. Well, I say garden, it is 3 pot plants....}

2.) 13 Jul 2017 12:53:37
3 pots? Does your missus have a say in that? I've got about 30 going to have to put my foot down

{Ed001's Note - I need something to talk to with some sense, so I got some plants. It was either that or talk to the missus, so plants it is....}

3.) 13 Jul 2017 16:06:53
Your missus doesn't read this forum then ed 😂

{Ed001's Note - reading is not her forte.}

06 Jun 2016 18:55:29
Anyone seen triple 9 and would recommend it. Sounds good but it's got Kate Winslet in it and she really can't act at all so I need a recommendation to get me to attempt it

discountdave

1.) 08 Jun 2016 07:14:22
I have not seen it sorry.

2.) 08 Jun 2016 11:09:51
No worries ed just one I'll have to risk

{Ed001's Note - let us know if it is any good then mate.}

14 Jul 2015 19:40:27
Anybody seen the suicide squad trailer looks very good.

Wasn't to keen on jared leto playing the joker (massive fan of heath ledgers joker) but got to say he looks very good

discountdave

{Ed001's Note - when is that out? I would like to see that.}

1.) 14 Jul 2015 20:18:35
Not sure ed it's only saying 2016 atm.

{Ed001's Note - they take so long to get films out these days. By the time they appear I have forgotten about them!}

2.) 14 Jul 2015 23:39:59
its on youtube ed001. comicon is when all the trailers get released.

There's a new trailer for dawn of justice too that 3 minutes long and looks insightful to the storyine.

There's an evil dead one if that was ever your thing.

Deadpool's looks ok

{Ed001's Note - I remember when the original Evil Dead was banned in the UK and you had to get it from the local video store under the counter. I was only about 11 when I was left alone in the house to watch it.}

3.) 15 Jul 2015 08:27:39
It does look to be in the same mould as the old evil deads, a sort of comedy caper with raw violence. Should be better than all those jump scare movies we get now.
You have nightmares for a fair while ed?

I remember watching Critters when I was 5/6 I didn't sleep for weeks. My gran put it on the vhs system thinking it was going to be like gremlins.She was gravely mistaken.

{Ed001's Note - I was in Bootle, you see worse than that down the jiggers! I can remember nan hearing a knocking on the gate while hanging the washing out in the back yard and opening the door to find just a pair of feet swinging. Some guy had been hung/hung himself right outside.}

4.) 16 Jul 2015 02:51:05
That sounds creepy ed. Your ex boyfriend was ? 😉 the only movie in recent times which has had me scared is the conjuring. And that too mildly

{Ed001's Note - I fell asleep watching that, never did get to see the end.}

5.) 16 Jul 2015 09:17:28
Must have been quite harrowing for your nan that. Or was she part of the stiff upper lip generation and never mentioned it?

I think the best scary/horror movie I've seen in recent years is the descent.It uses jump scares but has a scary plot too and plays on some ones fear of darkness and tight spaces.

{Ed001's Note - she was used to it mate, she was a nurse all her life and during the Blitz she would be tasked with a bucket to go out collecting body parts left in the rubble, as Bootle was the most bombed area of England during it. She used to tell one story over and over about how they had to put a toe tag on each of the bodies in the morgue afterwards. One day they had a guy with no arms and legs and, well I will leave you to figure out where she put the tag!}

6.) 16 Jul 2015 11:26:08
You think you could try and imagine living in those times,but you just can't. The tragedies and horrors,unsuspecting and unprepared people must have seen.
My dad still has the Diary of his grandad and great uncle from the front line in world war 1. Some of the stuff written in it you wouldn't believe. He drew a lot of what he saw as an expression of the emotion,personality growth(removal) and violence he witnessed. As a way of venting I guess. I certainly got a picture of why older generations have the attitude they have from what I read and saw in his diaries /pictures

{Ed001's Note - they would be great reads, have you ever considered getting them published?}

7.) 16 Jul 2015 12:06:14
It had never crossed my mind. I see them as my dad's property. They're still up in an old wooden case in the attic I think apart from 2 pictures he has in the hallway. When I'm next home in Wales I'll speak to him about it.
A lot of people mention the pictures when they come round,so probably worth looking into if other people would be interested.

{Ed001's Note - it would be a good time to do so with it being 100 years since WW1.}

8.) 16 Jul 2015 13:45:05
Yes definitely a good time with all the anniversary stuff.

My nan was in Coventry at the aircraft factories during the blitz.

{Ed001's Note - your nan? For some reason I thought you were older Mort1, must have you mixed up with another Mort.}

9.) 16 Jul 2015 15:24:50
Mort the merrier

01 Jul 2015 11:37:07
Just curious to see who is everyone's favourite actor?

Mine is tom hanks seems to be able to play any character

discountdave

{Ed001's Note - I would probably say Denzel. Personally I cannot stick Hanks, I think he is an awful actor.}

1.) 01 Jul 2015 12:09:27
Tom hanks awful really?

Yeah got to agree on denzel washington he's definitely up there

{Ed001's Note - Tom Hanks is exactly the same character in every film he plays, he doesn't come across differently in any role. Not like say Tom Hardy, who I really rate as well, who can come across as a nice guy in one film, the next he is a menacing bad guy. Each time he is as believable as the role allows. Tom Hanks, on the other hand, is a crap bad guy, I saw one film he was meant to be a baddie and it is was laughable, he just is unable to carry it off. He has absolutely no charisma whatsoever. I don't rate Samuel L Jackson, he is similar in that he can only really play one role, but he has charisma at least.}

2.) 01 Jul 2015 16:33:55
If you like tom hardy ed I recommend the drop.

{Ed001's Note - I will check that out, thanks.}

3.) 01 Jul 2015 22:34:29
Hard to pick just one but Tom Hardy and Leo DiCaprio are probably the 2 best actors around.

4.) 02 Jul 2015 12:52:10
I think Leo di caprio has got better. His early career was pretty woeful (the beach,titanic) but I think he really stepped up after blood diamond particularly wolf of wall st and django.

{Ed001's Note - DiCaprio is excellent, though I thought Django was awful, he was not awful in it. He was very good in Blood Diamond. I tell you who has really improved in recent years, the two from Dogma, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Neither were any good, though I do love Dogma, then just gradually got better and better. Affleck was really good in a film he directed, I think it was called Town. Oh and that film about the CIA rescuing hostages he was good in as well.}

5.) 02 Jul 2015 15:50:10
Matt Damon I like, the Bournes especially. Ben affleck I've never liked terrible actor imo. Ed as you are a fan you may like gone girl he starred and directed that movie.

{Ed001's Note - I am not a fan, I just think he has got much better. He has been good in a few of his recent films, but I would not watch a film because he was in it or directed it, I just wouldn't avoid it because of him. Unlike Nicolas Cage, who I would consider not watching a film just because he is in it.}

6.) 02 Jul 2015 22:19:39
Gotta agree with GAGUS, DiCaprio is a top actor.

{Ed002's Note - And nobody has mentioned Richard Bradford yet.}

7.) 03 Jul 2015 04:47:14
Haha Richard Bradford I do hope that was a joke Ed002. Didn't he have a small part in the untouchables?

George Lazenby too in arguably the best ever bond film.

On a serious note I like mark Wahlberg and if you haven't seen it watch pain and gain very funny.

{Ed001's Note - you have never seen Man In A Suitcase either then?}

8.) 03 Jul 2015 07:19:18
Can't say I have ed it's not a film title that would appeal to me

{Ed001's Note - it is the series that Richard Bradford is best known for. He has done quite a few films, but that is what he is known for.}

9.) 05 Jul 2015 22:33:20
Hardy, Damon, di caprio all good picks.

{Ed001's Note - I noticed no one has mentioned De Niro or Pacino or similar.}

10.) 06 Jul 2015 21:44:52
I was thinking about it, certainly both would be up there 20 years ago.

{Ed001's Note - shows the age most people on here are then I guess.}

11.) 06 Jul 2015 22:28:06
Well I would of said either of those but like mort said 20 yrs ago. One of my fave films is heat and obviously the mafia movies. As time went on they did some truly awful movies.

Sleepers is a great film.

{Ed001's Note - it is always a shame when great actors get wasted while dross like Nic Cage gets plum role after plum role to ruin.}

12.) 08 Jul 2015 10:59:08
Apart from the names mentioned i have always liked Bradley Cooper as an actor

13.) 11 Jul 2015 22:16:50
Agree with discountsave a lot of recent de niro films have been turkeys. But the 80s 90s films were great.

14.) 12 Jul 2015 16:55:07
Couple of other names I'd throw out there, Morgan freeman is Mr reliable, these days seems to be pigeon holed into the wise old man role though.

Depp is like hardy, doesn't stick to the same type of role he does vary things up.

Did anyone say Gary oldman?

And if this is open to women, Helena Bonham Carter

{Ed001's Note - do you rate Depp? I have yet to see him in a film I could really say I enjoyed.}

15.) 12 Jul 2015 16:56:29
And I just saw the lazenby comment, seriously? Best bond film ever? Might need a new thread for that one

16.) 12 Jul 2015 21:12:29
I think he's better than some others.

{Ed001's Note - there are a lot of rubbish actors though, so that is not saying much!}

17.) 13 Jul 2015 14:54:41
Leonardo Di Caprio is the best actor around not to win an Oscar.

Such a farce!

{Ed001's Note - I honestly thought he did have one.}

18.) 13 Jul 2015 15:10:57
Those of you saying about GTA making a good movie, I don't think so really.

GTA has some good characters throughout it's entire lifespan such as Claude(GTAIII) Tommy Vercetti(Vice City) and Niko Belic(GTA IV) but it's all been done before. This is the problem, it's revolutionary in a gaming sense because of how it's played, but movie wise, there are so many similar stories and plot lines out there.

19.) 13 Jul 2015 15:48:50
Unfortunately, he's only ever been nominated and the people who won instead of him, were a joke!

He was nominated for the following;

Best Actor in a Supporting Role
What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
Won by Tommy Lee Jones, The Fugitive

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role
The Aviator (2004)
Won by Jamie Foxx, Ray.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role
Blood Diamond (2006)
Won by Forest Whitaker, Last king of Scotland

Best Motion Picture of the Year
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
Won by 12 Years a Slave

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
Won by Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club

However. As you can see, the majority of the people who won it, are not even in the same league as DiCaprio. Or the performance he put in for his movies. He's not just a pretty face, he's a damn good actor! It's no wonder people think there is a conspiracy against him lol.

{Ed001's Note - I do like Tommy Lee Jones, but not sure he is the greatest actor to be fair. Not a big fan of Jamie Foxx but he does turn in some good performances. Basically I agree, DiCaprio is better than those, but Oscars are just a load of crap anyway.}

20.) 13 Jul 2015 23:47:24
2006 was shocking. He was great in the departed too.

{Ed001's Note - I have never seen Last King Of Scotland, was it that bad?}

21.) 14 Jul 2015 10:31:19
It was apparently an excellent movie, my mother watched it and couldn't speak highly enough of it. I haven't seen it however, but it's still scandalous that Leo DiCaprio hasn't won an Oscar.

The only one I felt he genuine lost out on was in 2013 for 12 Years a Slave. All the others he should have won imo.

22.) 14 Jul 2015 10:33:07
I've seen it the once, when it first came on tv. can't really remember it it was a bit boring to be honest it only really picked up when mcavoys doctor character realised what a monster idi Amin was and tried to escape. Don't get me wrong Whitaker was good but I didn't think he was better than di caprio. I think the subject matter swung a few votes.

23.) 14 Jul 2015 23:55:31
Not wanting to be controversial.

I walked out of the aviator, I can normally sit through a terrible film if the acting is good,but not a chance with this one. I didn't think the acting of Leo was special.

Matthew McConaughey was more than worthy of his oscar in my opinion. It's a shame leo came up against such a strong performance that year as he really did show off his talent. Either way it's a toughy.

Blood diamond for me he had one of the worst accents going and just didn't convince me in the role. If you're going to win an oscar you have to be able to nail the accent at the very least.

Can't say i have seen what's eating gilbert,Tommy lee jones is a bang average actor and his performance in the fugitive was nothing spcecial for me.

He was brilliant in the departed I have no idea if he was nominated,he certainly should have been.

I wouldn't take anything to heart about the oscars,we all know that only over acted biopics win them now. 12 years,argo,kings speech,hurt locker etc etc and for the actors,Dallas buyer,lincoln,theory of,just seems we are in that period.

{Ed001's Note - did you not like Argo?}

26 Jun 2015 22:09:36
Mad max (new one) absolutely terrible.

I quite enjoyed the first mad max (Mel Gibson) so thought I might enjoy this one.

Well 2hrs of my life I'll never see again

discountdave

{Ed001's Note - really? You are the first person I have known that didn't enjoy it. I don't know whether to watch it or not now. I love the first one, which is putting me off seeing the remake.}

1.) 27 Jun 2015 07:28:57
Honestly mate I was expecting this to be good as I enjoyed the original one but I thought it was awful.

I'm going to watch the original one today to try and rid me of the tripe I watched yesterday.

{Ed001's Note - what was so bad about it? Just wondering as I have even heard people call it one of the top ten films ever, so it is interesting to get a different view.}

2.) 27 Jun 2015 08:13:09
The story was weak, it was more or less just driving all the way through, very little action, although it was called mad max the character max did very little.

We all have different tastes in films so you may like it but for me it was another disappointing remake.

{Ed001's Note - I seem to remember the original having very little in the way of strong story. It was mainly about the driving. Though I did have worries regarding it as the shots I saw looked to have been taken from Mad Max 2 remake, which was nothing like as good as the first film. I haven't seen the films for a long time now though, maybe it is time I remind myself how good they were?}

3.) 27 Jun 2015 08:41:27
Perhaps it's just me it's got 8.5 on imdb so it seems like people do like it.

It may just be my issue with all remakes I'm just not a fan if the original was good I see very little point in remaking it

{Ed001's Note - I am the same on remakes, it just seems a lazy way to make more money.}

4.) 27 Jun 2015 08:46:55
Oh and yes it was more of a remake of the 2nd one

{Ed001's Note - ah ok, that is not so appealing then, it was the first one that I particularly loved.}

5.) 28 Jun 2015 05:55:19
Very little action? Are you sure you watched the right film?

It was bat sh*t mental from start to finish. Great watch!

{Ed001's Note - so you recommend it then?}

6.) 28 Jun 2015 08:31:03
G.A.G.U.S thanks I just checked what I watched and it was herbie rides again.

All opinions differ and I thought it was awful.

7.) 28 Jun 2015 21:46:19
Yeah I would Ed. Opinions differ yeah, but 'very little' action?

8.) 29 Jun 2015 07:47:07
The thing G.A.G.U.S is that I really enjoyed the original mad max and I very rarely enjoy remakes and I didn't think there was a great deal of action.

One thing I didn't realise was the director George Miller who I believe was the director of the originals.

I only enjoyed the very first mad max thought 2 + 3 was crap

9.) 01 Jul 2015 03:38:56
Fair enough yeah, remakes are just a lack of imagination these days.

They're even making another new Spider-Man 😂

10.) 01 Jul 2015 11:32:16
Aslong as toby maguire will never don the spider suit I'll be happy.

{Ed001's Note - how many times can they remake Spidey???

11.) 06 Jul 2015 10:39:33
I saw The Town the other day ed001. Affleck was brilliant. I think he gets a lot of stick for his portrayal of DarDevil(script was terrible but his portrayal and actions representing those of a blind person to me were spot on) and also his stint of films whilst with Jlo were terrible,where I think he was just picking up cheques in such as jersey Girl,Paycheck,Gigli changing lanes.
I prefer Him in films with Dialogue rather than action,I think that's his forte.
I think in recent years he's invented himself as a serious actor. such as you said,the town,state of play,runner runner,gone girl, and Argo. He's trying to almost step away from being a hollywood hearthrob to serious actor for me,which was a good move.

With regards to Tom Hardy mentioned. I seriously think atthis time there is no actor who is comparable. I first fell in love for his acting skills when he was an unknown starring in star trek nemesis opposite Patrick Stewart. Their one on one Dialogue and scenes stole the show (From a poor film) They bounced well off one another,especially in the scene (echo over the voice)

Hardy transitions so easily into any role,and actually makes poor films watchable(I thought the drop was a terrible script) For me at the moment,he's hollywoods most bankable star.

{Ed001's Note - Argo! That was the film I was trying to think of, excellent film and Affleck did play the role well. I think you are right, he is much better as a serious actor, he just doesn't suit the hearththrob or action hero guise well. It just doesn't play to his strength. Which is a worry with him as the new Batman, so hopefully they will do what they did with Bale and hide his weaknesses using the suit. Allow Affleck to do the serious parts and then use the suit for the action.

I also agree with your thinking on Hardy, I can't think of anyone else that can slip into a role so easily, no matter what the role requires. He can be a totally believable nice guy in one film and the next be the opposite, not once do you see him as the guy from the previous film. He always manages to make you forget what you just saw him as and instead see him as what he is now. That is a great talent that very few have.

There are people out there like Statham that are very watchable, but they only really work well in the right role. He can be the flawed bad arse hero, but anything else and he just seems out of place. It is a shame Robin Williams is no longer with us, he was another that could slip into a role and make it seem like him. He could be evil in one film and then funny in the next. Shame he never really got the chance to show enough of his acting skills because of his talent for comedy.}

12.) 06 Jul 2015 12:55:05
I was apprehensive at first when I saw Affleck was appointed to be the new batman,but not dismissive as a lot of the comicon type fans seem to be. I am hoping like you,the action sequences are small,and it's more of a political type thing of Batman dialoguing with superman who will be working for the government.Seemingly the trailer hints at this, as well as Batman being ''old'' I am hoping for it to be more about trickery than action,and big fight sequences(I wasn't such a fan of those in man of steel,far too long,vileent and destructive for my liking given the character) I'll still see the film in the cinema regardless of how critical reviews turn out.

Agree completely with Statham being the Anti-hero type role. He plays it so well. I'd I'd like him to step away from doing so many sequels to his films though,but I guess he gets offered a lot of money,and the industry sees them as bankable.

I think a lot of the great ''serious'' acting roles Robin Williams performed mirrored his jovial personality and caring side. Such as his characters in good will hunting,Mrs Doubtfire,Jumanji,what dreams may come,dead poets society. He plays a family man who likes to joke and play,or some sort of guidance figure. Which mirrorred a lot for me,his real life personality.

I have never gone back and watched many of his films aimed at younger people though,which I think I must do at somepoint,to appreciate his comedy. I usually have a ''policy'' if you will of not watching comedies/comedians films after a certain time because a lot of jokes aren't relevant,and humour moves on pretty quickly I feel.

{Ed001's Note - Man of the Year is a film that really comes alive only when Williams gets to do gags, when he gets on a role, doing his own topical stand up, then it is brilliant.}

13.) 06 Jul 2015 14:01:46
Ill have a look out for that on netflix or hmv Ed,I might need to set aside a weekend and just have a RW binge day :)

{Ed001's Note - it is quite good to watch him on his soapbox.}

14.) 13 Jul 2015 14:58:32
I don't agree with your opinion on Robin Williams Ed001. I think he was nothing special.

He had his moments no doubt, Good Morning Vietnamn was excellent, but the majority of his movies were abysmal.

I watched this movie where he played the part of a Jewish man during WWII and he was also very good in that, but apart from that, I'd say he was your typical average actor.

{Ed001's Note - the man was a genius when he was allowed to be him. 24 Hour Photo he was good in.}

Agree with you about Steve Martin but I loved dirty rotten scoundrel and I can't stand Michael Caine either

discountdave

{Ed001's Note - I don't mind Caine for one reason and one reason only, me ma hates him. That makes him good to me, as I used to watch anything with him in just to annoy her. Crap actor like, but I have a soft spot for him for giving me so much fun as a kid.}
