Warcraft Review

I got taken to see this last night in the new upgraded local cinema, and I have to admit I was far more impressed with the facilities than I was with the film. Food delivery to your seat, blankets and pillows with comfy recliners, the main issue is trying to stay awake to watch the film! As for the film itself, where do I start?

Now I have to admit, I have never played Warcraft, though I am a big gamer and love the RPG genre, it is a game that has completely passed me by. It has never appealed to me. So I went into this film with an extremely low bar set, as I was not really keen to see it, but there was little else on that I had not already seen.

The film itself is about a band of Orks invading another world after passing through a magical portal and their war with humans. It is clearly just setting up a series of films, rather than being intended to be a one off film. As such it becomes difficult to judge it properly, without the context of the later film/s it is introducing.

I found this film extremely difficult to really get into. There were lots of different locations, but you got no sense of where they were in the world. It seemed like everywhere was within a quick journey, and you could be anywhere within a day. I had no idea if the world really was that small or if they just did not convey distances well.

The story was not too bad, but it really would have been better served with it being a trilogy on its own, as it just did not have time to really explain any part of the story. It just zipped through too quickly, with no real time to gain traction within you emotionally. You could not really identify with any of the characters, as they just never had the screen time to establish themselves as people.

What it ended up with was a mess. Effects were good, but the film was left just being a rushed botch job, rather than what could have been a good base to build upon. It did nothing to introduce the world of Warcraft to the big screen. It just left me wondering what on earth it was all about and not being impressed at all. I certainly will not be trying the game on the back of it, nor will I be rushing to the cinema to see the next Warcraft film.

Bloody hell ed I was looking forward to this.

Cheers for the review

Without drifting away from the original post I'm a big gamer but I have never played warcraft didn't appeal to me. Final Fantasy 7 best game ever

{Ed001's Note - I love FF7.}

Sounds like they were too ambitious. It's a shame as I like the sound of a big, primary coloured, fantasy adventure.

If you're into fantasy or animation Ed1 check out the trailer for 'Kubo and the Two Strings'. That's a film I'm really excited about.

{Ed001's Note - I just had a look at the trailer, it looks like a kids' film mate. I do like fantasy, but that really didn't float my boat, sorry.}

That's alright Ed, it's not for everyone but it's right up my street. I love the art and imagination that goes into it. I reckon a good kids' film is a good film first and foremost. If you've ever got a spare 90 minutes watch Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr Fox, it just might make a convert of you.

{Ed001's Note - I can't stand that film, but I do agree that a good kids' film can be a good film for all ages.}

Something like the flight of dragons for example. Now there's a forgotten classic.

Ed001, the world in which Warcraft was at one stage pretty much the same sort of size as Middle Earth in Lord of the Rings.

That's a map taken from World of Warcraft the game and I believe that is the entire world.

{Ed001's Note - so not huge then.}

09 Jun 2016 18:05:28
Really?!?! That's one of my favorite films! Are you a fan of any animation, I mean, surely you love the Incredibles?

{Ed001's Note - it is ok. Finding Nemo I loved because I saw it with my daughter when she was tiny and she was glued for the entire thing.}

Just heard that Warcraft is part of a trilogy of potential films. As someone who never played the 'world of' games it doesn't hold too much anticipation but nevertheless I'm sure I will watch them anyway.

Kubo looks a decent idea but maybe lacking in depth of story, going to check it out though. Fantastic mr fox is one I literally can't change channel quick enough. Good animation but the voice actors are so terrible and boring it just puts me off completely. I do like the Pixar films but that's probably more because my lad loves them, especially bolt which I do believe is my most watched movie ever.

As for animation Akira or any of the gibhli movies must be more up your street ed001?

{Ed001's Note - actually no, I don't like those at all. I find them annoying and can't stand the artwork style. My daughter is addicted to them though.}

Have you ever seen Kung pow ed ?.i like your choice of ong bak it's one of those films you can watch over and over and my other favourite martial arts film would be zatoichi.but my favourite film is the postman! Most of you will laugh but I love it

{Ed001's Note - I haven't seen it mate, is it not like Shaolin Soccer etc? Only I hated that movie. I do like Zatoichi, I also love the Assassin one with the baby in the hand cart. I forget what that is called. Utter junk, but brilliant fun.

I have never heard of the Postman, what is it?}

12 Jul 2016 23:24:17
Kung pow is a kinda comedy martial arts film.they got a 1970s martial arts film completely re dubbed it and inserted an actor into it with cgi,theres nothing to compare it too really it's a one of a kind
The postman is a Kevin Costner film set in a post apocalyptic earth and to explain it would take too long. imagine Wild West but with m16s and small arms, Kevin Costner has to unite the people to fight against an army that oppressing them

Anyone seen triple 9 and would recommend it. Sounds good but it's got Kate Winslet in it and she really can't act at all so I need a recommendation to get me to attempt it

08 Jun 2016 07:14:22
I have not seen it sorry.

08 Jun 2016 11:09:51
No worries ed just one I'll have to risk

{Ed001's Note - let us know if it is any good then mate.}

How awful does the ghostbusters remake look. The original was a classic, ruining another classic with a shoddy remake.

06 Jun 2016 16:44:35
Yeah I agree the remake looks like rubbish but then again I thought the original was rubbish too

{Ed001's Note - you didn't like the original Ghostbusters???? Oh. That is one of my favourite childhood melodies going to see that at the cinema, a whole group of us went. The queue to get in went round the block and they put chairs in the aisles for extra people to sit down. Everyone in the place was singing along to the tune. Was a fantastic occasion.}

06 Jun 2016 18:15:02
It's just not my sort of thing ed at all but if I had to sit through the original or the remake the original wins hands down.

{Ed001's Note - mind you are probably a bit old for it to have been good for you.... ;-)

06 Jun 2016 18:23:02
I just love bill murray, love most things he's in. Kingpin is one of my favorite films with him in it.

06 Jun 2016 18:43:05
I'll have you know when ghostbusters was released I would of been 1yr old.

From my childhood the one film that I loved was jaws which I suppose is strange as its nothing like a children's film.

To be honest I not into anything with ghosts in I find then all cheesy and the same.

Having said that ghostbusters was a comedy just not a very funny one

{Ed001's Note - oh my, I thought you were in your 60s mate!!}

06 Jun 2016 18:48:36
No I only look like I'm in my 60s tough paper round an all that

{Ed001's Note - uphill? In the snow and ice, and that was just June....}

06 Jun 2016 18:53:03
How did you know was you on the same route?

{Ed001's Note - yes mate, but I managed to stay young and beautiful....}
