Anyone watched stranger things? I'm four episodes in and it's awesome. Some of the things that are discussed on the conspiracy page is what the programme is about. Really reccomend it.

10 Aug 2016 02:47:41
I watched it a few week back and thouht it was great, has a very nostalgic feel to it. Few Series have the ability to actually make you feel for the characters but this achieved it superbly. Season two already looks likely which I for one am very happy about!

So I went to see Jason Bourne yesterday, being a big fan of the original trilogy I was really looking forward to the return of Matt Damon to the title role. While I like Jeremy Renner as an actor, the film with him in it was a complete letdown, sadly, so I was looking forward to a return to the original format.

This one stuck more closely to the formula of the Renner episode, with more action than intrigue, but it went even further towards action and away from intrigue. It was a full-on action flick. One that kept going from start to finish and I fully enjoyed it, even if I did miss the intrigue from the originals.

What was clear is that it set up another trilogy, with references to some mysterious program called Iron Hand that was never explained, but left open. Obviously with the intent of a next movie to deal with this new follow up to the Treadstone program that produced Bourne himself.

The storyline was really incidental, even the bits exploring Bourne's past and parentage, and just there to move things to the next action scene. This was really about Bourne being Bourne and taking on the CIA in all its might. While it lacks the thought provoking moments of the initial films, with its CIA Black Ops and their consequences, it still worked. It never tried to be like those, it just concentrated on action and that was all it needed.

I saw Star Trek Beyond on Thursday night, this is the first chance I have had to review it, even quickly. I really do not know how to explain the feeling of disappointment it left me with, even though I had gone in expecting nothing, as I am not a Trek fan at all.

It had some funny moments, clearly the influence of Simon Pegg, who shared the writing credits. Sadly that could not rescue this film and make it worth watching. In a similar vein to the most recent Star Wars film, it was more of a homage to the original series, rather than a new film.

There was some decent action, added to the comedy moments, so it should have amounted to an excellent film. Beyond just ended up a popcorn flick, a piece of enjoyable trash but nothing worth paying for.

With the prices the cinemas charge these days we should be getting more.

25 Jul 2016 20:57:13
Did u enjoy the previous 2 star trek films ed? I'm not a trekkie fan but did enjoy the last 2.

{Ed001's Note - not really, they were just ok. This one was better than them, in my opinion. It is just that Trek, in general, is just not for me, I guess.}

27 Jul 2016 02:18:00
Personally I think Star Trek films, Nimoy as director aside, are just popcorn flicks. Nice visuals, good pacing, and decent characters. Nothing about any of the films as a whole scream classic to me. The Nimoy films are different though, and really concentrate on character development and interpersonal storylines with a side note of scifi thrown in. I do like the new films and Urbans as Bones. works as does Pine as Kirk. The rest of the casting is hit and miss depending on the scene but a good way to waste a few hours in my book.

{Ed001's Note - they did do some character development with Spock and Bones, which was probably gave the best moments of the film. They threw them together and it led to some good lines and the best moments of comedy. I have no problems with the cast at all, they were very good to be honest.}

29 Jul 2016 01:28:21
Glad to hear that it's a half decent film, but if I couldn't make it to the big screen for civil war I won't be trying for this. Have a big Trekkie friend and will just borrow his DVD in a few months instead.

Have to say on a Star Trek thread that my condolences have to go out to the family and friends of Anton Yelcin. Such a shame a talented actor is no longer with us.

So the teaser trailer for justice league just dropped, not much given away but seems to be a more polished approach than when BvS was released. Maybe the DCU has learnt its lesson and is trying to concentrate on character progression rather than blockbuster action, only time will tell. Only gripe is Bruce Wayne's ease of announcing he's batman. Still with this and suicide squad coming up the future looks bright for the DCU.

Also dr strange trailer 2 released and looks like the MCU is really embracing the magical elements of their back catalogue. With the likes of Thor, dr strange, and possibly captain marvel all explained with magical abilities they seem to be setting up a good counter to The technologically based super Heros they have already established.

{Ed001's Note - I am looking forward to Suicide Squad in a couple of weeks.}

25 Jul 2016 11:49:29
Suicide squad looks like it will be a game changer, and personally I think it is down to the success of guardians. Guardians showed Hollywood that a little known team of Heros/anti-Heros can be a successful blockbuster. After the relative failures of the likes of watchmen I think it gave studios the confidence to keep investing in the little know comic book groups. I do however think the film will hinge on smiths execution. If he nails dead shot I think any flaws will be easily overlooked, if not then the dcu will have trouble explaining why all their upcoming films deserve the funding.

20 Jul 2016 14:26:55
edit: just bothered to scroll down and saw your comments! sorry

{Ed001's Note - no worries mate.}

20 Jul 2016 14:22:01
have you seen deadpool ed001, rather enjoyed it myself.

{Ed001's Note - yes mate, I loved it. One of my favourite films in fact.}

20 Jul 2016 14:48:37
mine too, didn't realise there was a movies page until i saw you mention it on the liverpool page and got a bit over excited to ask your opinion.

{Ed001's Note - hahaha. That's ok, this page is quite a bit quieter than the Liverpool page, so I don't tend to end up getting 20 questions a day asking the same thing I have already answered.}

14 Jul 2016 19:16:30
I just got taken to see Central Intelligence, I hate to say it but it was actually good. Funny. Well worth a watch. Ed007's favourite wrassler, The Rock, was actually very good. It was certainly not the best comedy ever, but a good enjoyable entertaining action comedy. Kevin Hart was almost playing the straight man at times, as most of the best lines came from Rocky.

{Ed007's Note - Cheers mate, the Mrs had mentioned watching that. We''ll give it a bash at the weekend.}

16 Jul 2016 02:26:52
It was a good watch to be fair, the Rock actually played his part really well and made me laugh at times which is very unusual because he really can't act. 7.5/10

{Ed007's Note - Of course he can act lol Have you watched wrestling? My Mrs is at me to se if that new Ghostbusters is on KODI yet, you see what I'm up against? Films from a woman whose entire act is she's fat, Roseanne Barr done that 30 years ago!}

27 Jul 2016 02:30:00
Bond, I think I might disagree on the McCarthy comment. Although no where near my favourite comic actor, in fact she would probably struggle to get in my top 100 if I could be bothered to do a list. She is however more than a one joke pony and has amazing timing. Had to sit through a few of her films the other week and realised she can deliver s joke. I find her 'I'm fat' routines very old very quick and I think she has consigned herself to being typecast for the dollars that come with being one of the worlds leading female comics.

{Ed007's Note - I've been forced to watch a few of her films too. How many times is the fact she's a) fat and b) a women, mentioned in her films? Oh look, a fat women CIA agent, oh look, a fat con woman, oh look a fat woman cop etc etc Woeful stuff.}

29 Jul 2016 22:43:36
Agree it's mentioned a lot but also think she delivers some good laughs too. Now this may be because I'm completely whipped and forced to sit through absolute garbage like Katherine heigl, I think that's her name, Kirsten wigg and Amy Adams as comic leads that I'm now numb to female comics and as soon as one tells an actual joke I over estimate their ability ;)

10 Jul 2016 15:57:56
the original Die Hard film is on TV here now, and I am just reminded what a legend Alan Rickman is. This film is a great because of him, not Bruce Willis.

12 Jul 2016 09:03:22
I wanted this to be professional, efficient, adult, cooperative. Not a lot to ask. Alas, your Mr. Takagi did not see it that way. so he won't be joining us for the rest of his life

One of my favourite lines

29 Jul 2016 22:44:08
Best xmas film ever.

09 Jul 2016 13:17:53
Bit quiet on here. What's ya top 5 films eds and fellow readers?
I'll start
1 usual suspects
2 seven
3 dark knight
4 12 angry men
5 aliens.

{Ed001's Note - mine is mostly martial arts films:
Enter The Dragon
Ong Bak
The Raid
Ip Man
Then I am torn between so many comic book films for so many different reasons and the original Star Wars films. I can't pick a fifth.}

09 Jul 2016 14:11:58
Good selection of films that ed. The raid is such a class film. Can't wait for the 3rd 1 to come out.

{Ed001's Note - it was a special film and showed it isn't all about huge Hollywood budgets to make a good film.}

09 Jul 2016 14:45:25
It was a good story and the action/fighting scenes are some of the best I've seen in a movie. I did hear they were planning on doing a Hollywood remake of it.

{Ed001's Note - they usually do if a film is a success.}

10 Jul 2016 10:11:39
Mine are a bit more varied in genre but here goes:

1. Alien
2. Mallrats
3. Goodfellas
4. Ong Bak
5. Batman

These are not in any specific order and are only my fav 5 today, they can and do swap out for the likes of K-Pax, Halloween, Airplane, Dr Strangelove and LOTR as well as many more very regularly.

{Ed001's Note - Batman? The one with Michael Keaton? Surely not! Never seen or even heard of Mallrats. Alien is great, but just not great enough to get in with my love of martial arts. Airplane is the best comedy ever, without doubt, in my mind. LOTR? Which one? Not those recent ones which butchered the books? Do you mean the original unfinished cartoon? That was good.}

10 Jul 2016 15:45:51
Yeah the Michael Keaton one. I know it's not the greatest of films according to almost any critical criteria but I just love it and have watched it back to back multiple times.

Mallrats is one of Kevin smiths earlier films, bit of a teen comed so not for everyone, but again it's one of those I just love and could watch over and over and Its just the nostalgia that outs airplane from the list.

LOTR is unfortunately the modern ones. As great as the cartoon is and how badly they differed from/butchered the books, it was such a great cinema experience to see that world. Do not think I've had such a visually great time in the cinema as when watching those films.

{Ed001's Note - I really do not see anything to love about any of those old Batman films. Everything from the script, to the acting, to the effects is awful.

Ah I am not a big fan of his, other than Dogma (I think that is him right?), just not my thing.

I am too big a fan of the books to have anything but distaste for films that destroyed them and looked and felt nothing like I imagined it to be. Maybe if I had gone to the cinema to see them I would have felt differently, but I doubt it. The very fact they created all the lines for Liv Tyler, just because she is a star, just tells me how little integrity it was filmed with.}

10 Jul 2016 16:40:20
Yeah dogma is one of his, and probably a better film critically.

I am a huge fan of the books and have read through all 4(including the hobbit) at least 5 times. Tried the sillmarillion once but found it very difficult. The inclusion of certain things, like liv Tyler's over use, and the exclusion of certain things, such as Tom bombadil, really did frustrate me too. However as I already stated, seeing middle earth and especially rivendell become 'real' was mind blowing for me. Personally I would find it unfair not to include them on such a list just due to the pure visceral effect I had whilst watching them.

As for batman, well there really is no way to justify it. Keaton is a decent actor but probably miscast, Nicholsons joker is far too eccentric and lacks any real menace, bassinger is one if the worst love interests in all comic book movies, Burtons world is almost a visual pun in its use of overtly gothic buildings, soundtrack breaks up any atmosphere or direction the film builds from scene to scene. However I just love it. Sometimes the justification is personal and this is one of those even though I can see all the flaws it is still a great film to me.

{Ed001's Note - interesting mate. We all have our own tastes or life would be boring. There are loads of films I like for no real good reason, I just enjoy them, even though they are crap. Like music, in my opinion, all that matters is the mood it envokes in you watching.}

10 Jul 2016 16:42:34
Ed would also be very interested in the possible comic book movies you were referring to and the reasons why they almost broke into your top 5.

{Ed001's Note - the Avengers movies, Deadpool, the last two Captain America films, the Iron Man films, the Dark Knight trilogy. I just love comic book films. Pure escapism. Well not all are. I have yet to see an X-Men film worth watching, or a Spidey one that was any good.}

11 Jul 2016 01:49:11
Good set of films there and as a bit of a comic nerd the genre in general is one of my favourites. Quite surprised the likes of watchmen and guardians didn't make the cut but age of ultron and iron man 2 did.

Dead pool was one of those comics that never immersed me but that may have been because it never regularly made it to the shelves of my local store until I was about 20. However the film translated beautifully. Reynolds timing was perfect and the overall tone was executed brilliantly.

Totally agree about the xmen franchise, and although they are all decent enough killers of s few hours, none are good films for me. I am hoping apocalypse changes my mind but the reviews don't seem to favourable. Can't wait for a decent wolverine casting and the likes of sinestro and a real Phoenix to appear on screen.

As for Spider-Man, well they are all garbage but the first Tobey film did have some redeeming factors but they mainly involved Defoes and jk Simmons ability to steal the screen from the rest of the cast. Also Molina as doc ock was a perfect casting.

I'm really looking forward to Wonder Woman, black panther, and Inhumans in the next few years. Ragnorak could also be amazing but my hopes aren't high as of yet.

{Ed001's Note - I forgot about Guardians to be honest. Watchmen is just so long I have never had a chance to sit and watch it in one sitting. There is always editing to be done.

Ryan Reynolds was born to play Deadpool, in my opinion, it was the absolute perfect role for him. Never read the comic, nor knew the character, but loved the film.

Apocalypse is not a good film, to put it mildly. Hugh Jackman is an embarrassment as Wolverine, who on earth cast him as it? It is purely because he is good looking, but what happened to being a good fit for a role? Jackman is not physically impressive enough. He lacks charisma and has no ability to convey the fighting style of Wolverine.

Why Wonder Woman? I found her appearance in BvS a bit meh. She just didn't stand out at all, which she should have done alongside such a wooden character as Superman. Black Panther is the one I am looking forward to, in particular, though I do like the idea of the next Thor one too. Which reminds me, did I include the Thor films? Never enjoyed the first one initially, but watched it again a few times since, as well as the second one, and they do grow on you.}

11 Jul 2016 14:51:24
I think Wonder Woman is a great character and really enjoyed how they have already taken her visually. I think a semi origin story would be great for her on the big screen as it combines a few different classic genres. It could be a blend of out of element comedy like Tarzan stories with 300 esque fight scenes against godly/demonic enemies ala clash of titans. As for BvS, although I enjoyed it I can see the meh elements. I do think people will look back on it in the same vein as the first cap America film, a bit meh but a good starting point for the universe.

The first 2 Thor films still fail to wow me but they are entertaining. The new one could be extremely good but hopefully it won't be like the others, an ok film lifted up by an amazing bad guy in Loki.

In regards to Reynolds as dead pool, he was perfect and his desire I get the film of the ground added to how much I enjoyed the film.

{Ed001's Note - ah there we have it, you like the way she looks! I don't think she lives up to the original in any way shape or form. She was a disappointment to me. I expected more to be honest. She was not hot enough, nor did she have the charisma to feel powerful. I do not blame the actress for that, I blame the writer, who squeezed in her character with little real development to it.

I actually agree on BvS, I think it is not as bad as some think and does set the scene. Similar to the first Thor film in that respect.

Loki is a fantastic villain. He also made the first Avengers film work so well, the villain has to be great to make the hero suitably heroic. Hence why I think Spidey has not worked yet, they have never gone with the better villains, or particularly my favourite villain Vulture.}

29 Jul 2016 22:57:07
Yeah I think she looks great. Good costume, more warrior like and I think she is beautiful so good combo for me. Have heard a few snippets about the film since we last spoke and am surprised that tge invisible jet may make an appearance in the film, starting to be less excited but still great to have a female led comic book film.

Have been thinking about Spider-Man villains and truly think that there are only 2 that really should be considered: vulture and shocker. I think both are perfect foil for what Spider-Man can do as well as being new to screen and so cutting ties with previous canon. So many could be used to play shocker due to the mask and unnecessarily elongated origin but vulture would need to be perfectly cast or would be a flop. Similar to Molina as doc ock.

{Ed001's Note - ah yes she is beautiful but just doesn't have any real charisma in the role for me. She doesn't quite convince me of her power yet. Maybe she will grow into it or my mind will accept her after a couple of movies. I grew up watching Linda Carter (who was truly stunning) as Wonder Woman, and Gal Gadot does not compare to my childhood fantasy woman!

It has to be Vulture, he was one of, if not the, first villains in the Spidey comics.}

10 Aug 2016 02:55:26
I'm pretty sure Vulture is the villain in Tom Holland's Spider-Man film, I'm not sure when we'll get to see it though

{Ed001's Note - I really hope so.}
