Just done watching Criminal. Nothing spectacular about the film. The action scenes are OK but just not as much as I was expecting after watching its trailer. I think the strength of this film is Costner. Really enjoyed watching him. And the song at the end credit. Love it.

{Ed001's Note - I quite liked it myself, but I agree it was nothing special, just a good, solid film. Have to say Costner was excellent though, he was never an actor I rated in the past, but his films in the last few years have shown he really can act.}

31 Dec 2016 09:27:17
Exactly Ed01. I would say the same about George Clooney. After watched The Descendants, my opinions on him totally changed.

{Ed001's Note - I like Clooney, he just struggles to get good roles due to his looks, I think. Also probably doesn't help that he is a political activist trying to protect human rights. Could make it difficult to raise funding for a film he is in when corporations hate him as he is constantly campaigning against the damage they do.}

S Storm (2016)

The ICAC in Hong Kong set up a team to investigate corruption in football betting in the city. One of the suspects is assassinated almost immediately leading to an investigation which is being hindered by the police investigating the murder.

It is a Chinese movie, so avoid if you do not like subtitles or dubbed films. If you can look past that, it is a fairly enjoyable film, though not one of the better ones available. It is worth a watch, though the side stories are silly and do tend to ruin the effect of the main story. Not silly as in Jim Carrey comedy, silly as in just not feeling realistic.

Mystery Road (2013)

An Australian movie which led to a sequel due to its success. It follows an indigenous detective, Jay Swan, who returns to his home town and an investigation into the murder of a young girl.

A surprisingly good movie, which keeps you involved from start to finish. It is not all action blockbuster but it is excellent and well worth a watch. It held my attention from the start until the end.

Anyone watched Usual Suspects? With Bennicio Del Toro. Been recommended it so I'm going to watch it tonight. Is it any good?

{Ed001's Note - I have never seen it, but everyone tells me I should. Let me know what you think please.}

29 Dec 2016 19:22:28
One of the best films you will ever see. Can't believe you haven't seen it Ed. It's that good u will watch it twice in quick succession.

{Ed001's Note - one day I might get round to watching it.}

30 Dec 2016 03:15:02
Great movie.

Equity (2016)

A low budget indy film about the world of high finance, very heavily based around women. The main star is an investment banker who is not the nicest person in the world, being particularly fond of ripping into her subordinates over the slightest things. She is under pressure after a previous IPO she presided over went bad and she is leading another involving a cyber-security company, which has whispers about a lack of security surrounding it. Her boyfriend (well friend with benefits really) is a hedge fund manager who is being investigated for insider trading and an old school friend is also digging up dirt in her job as a Justice Department investigator.

It really lacks something to make it into a better film. The only outstanding feature is that it so heavily female. Other than that, it is a very straight forward movie, with no real twists or surprises. It was a bit boring if anything.

01 Jan 2017 12:00:32
I suppose boring not only describes the film but also working in the equity market!!

{Ed001's Note - when you earn the money they do, life is anything but boring mate.}

28 Dec 2016 18:00:12
Just got home from watching rogue one, nothing else to say but utterly amazing! at the moment I want to say it's the greatest star wars film ever but I'm still on a high so that judgement might change when I calm down from all the excitement!

Man From Nowhere (2010)

This is very much a Korean remake of 'Man On Fire', which is one of my favourite films of all time. Because of that, Man From Nowhere had a lot to live up to, and it did, mostly at least. It was an excellent film, with a very different interpretation, but one that worked just as well as the Denzel film. The only thing that really kept it from being just as good, or better, was the lack of Denzel Washington in the lead. The lead actor was good, but just not Denzel level.

It built up the relationship between the lead and the little girl nicely, though in a much darker way than Man On Fire. The action was much less refined as well, more brutal, in many ways. The film was a different take on a dark revenge thriller theme and was just as excellent and is a film I recommend on its own merits.

28 Dec 2016 13:10:31
Glad you enjoyed it, Ed01.

{Ed001's Note - it was a really good film, cheers for recommending it.}

27 Dec 2016 06:57:46
Inferno (2016)

The third of Tom Hanks' attempts to make Dan Brown novels watchable, and his third miserable failure. I have never read the books, but, based on the films, I am glad I have managed to avoid them. This time around, his character, Robert Langdon, wakes up in an Italian hospital with amneisa and teams up with the doctor treating him, played by Felicity Jones, to save the world from a deadly virus.

Just trash. Utter trash. Terrible story, badly shot with awful directing. If it had not had Felicity Jones in it, I would have switched this off after ten minutes. Avoid.

26 Dec 2016 06:42:22
Suicide Squad (2016)

I seen this film at the cinema and did not enjoy it at all. However, I thought I would give it another chance by watching the extended version, in the hope I had just expected too much and/or the cinematic cut had left out scenes that made the film better.

What I found was a film that was no better on second viewing, with little discernible improvement, if any, from the extra scenes. The problem is that the film does not just suffer from being badly told, it has a lack of good characters. The best characters are the fringe ones, Batman and Joker, the rest are just either not very good, or just badly done.

Will Smith's Deadshot just does not work, he is completely yawn inducing. Harley Quinn just makes me want to throw something at the TV, her voice grates on my nerves. Capt Boomerang is just not up to the physical aspects of his role. None of the characters hold any real interest, as they keep ruining their badness by trying to give them a good side. This film is just not very good, sadly.

26 Dec 2016 09:10:21
Fully agree! The best part was the end credits! I watched this when the missus left me home alone one evening, so I wasted a good night on it!

{Ed001's Note - it is no better on a second viewing, very disappointing.}

24 Dec 2016 06:09:52
Ben Hur (2016)

I have never seen the original Ben Hur, so I was not going into this with a comparison to make, just a film to watch. Even on that basis, this film was utter tosh. I was so bored by five minutes in that I was losing the thread of the story, being utterly distracted by such excitement as watching the kettle boil. I tried to perservere with it, but I just could not manage to sit through more than 20 minutes before I had to turn it off. Utter crap. Avoid.

24 Dec 2016 08:18:00
This one is by that Russian who made Day Watch right? Forgot his name. Does it have ridiculous fancy action scenes? I hated all his movies.

{Ed001's Note - I don't know who directed, it was so badly done and the action was ridiculous, so it could well be. Utter trash this film.}

23 Dec 2016 06:21:26
Eliminators (2016)

This is the film of a US federal agent, in hiding in the UK with his daughter, whose home is attacked by a gang of drug dealers. Forced to defend himself, his picture is shown all over the world on TV, leading to the gangster who is after him discovering where he is. A dangerous assassin is despatched to hunt him and his daughter down.

If, like me, the moment the WWE logo came up in the titles you groaned and considered switching the film off, then you will probably be pleasantly surprised by this film. Stu Bennett (who wrestled under the name Wade Barrett) is much better than the usual wrestler turned actor, in his role as the assassin. He is clearly playing the role after watching The Transporter multiple times and doing a northern grit version of Jason Statham. Or it could just be that the role never stretched him in its requirements. Either way, he was decent in his role as the ruthless assassin sent to hunt the federal agent down.

Scott Adkins is the actual lead and, as usual, he is ok. The film is able to quickly switch from action scene to action scene, with a number of good fights sprinkled liberally along the way. What you end up with is a solid action flick that entertains you thoroughly, even if it fails to provide the emotional attachment to the characters that a film such as Man On Fire generates. Worth a watch.

Blackfish (2013)

Now I have watched this a few times but forced the in laws to sit down and watch it last night and was totally shocked on their ignorance of the subject.

As someone who had visited the Florida park many moons ago I, like most, thought that these animals were in places of high care that it could be excused for the small display tanks etc as the backstage was expected to be perfect conditions.

When the documentary talks about the park in Canada, sealand? My mother in law actually started crying. As a highly educated lady in her 60s I felt that she would have had this subject encroach upon her life in some way. Her response enforced upon me that this film is needed to be seen by all cinema goers. If you have seen it, please recommend to friends and family. If you gave not seen it yet please do.

23 Dec 2016 06:21:16
I have never even heard of this film before. I will have a look for it and see if I can find it to watch.

23 Dec 2016 10:28:43
Is this the one on netflix atm? I have watched it and its just another example of big companies more worried about the bottom line rather then the health of its animals and workers. Actually quite shocking. I will never take my kids to anything like that after watching this.

23 Dec 2016 14:36:25
Yeah James it's on Netflix at the moment. It's an absolutely devastating watch. Shows how many deaths/injuries were completely avoidable and unnecessary. Look out for the shot where a dossier of park incidents is shown but specifically look at the dates and how close they are and how little was represented in the media.

23 Dec 2016 16:28:30
Fantastic documentary albeit very sad,I also urge everyone to watch the cove,even more shocking but needs to be seen by everyone so the scumbags can be exposed

24 Dec 2016 18:21:02
I went to Seaworld Florida when I was younger and thought it was great. I went back a few years ago and thought it was horrendous.

Everything looks so much bigger when you're a kid.

22 Dec 2016 05:51:27
Masterminds (2016)

The story was good, based on the true story of the biggest cash robbery in US history. Unfortunately the execution, which was intended to be a comedy, was terrible. With a very strong cast of big names, I expected a lot more from this film, but it just lacked any really funny moments. It was just a bit ....... odd.

21 Dec 2016 05:50:40
November Rule (2016)

Steve has a rule in life, to never get too close to women, so he has a rule to end every relationship in November, to avoid being part of a couple over Christmas and Valentine's Day. Being busy with his two best friends, preparing for the opening of their dream, a sneaker (trainers) store, he has hit November while in a relationship with Leah (played by Tatyana Ali, now all grown up from her childhood role in Fresh Prince of Bel Air). Realising the date, he dumps her, only to realise his mistake as he genuinely loves her.

A low budget comedy, which turns out to be more of a romance film, disappointly. It is most interesting for the appearance of Ali, for those of us that grew up watching Fresh Prince and, for 'sneaker heads' the shoes, which are a fairly large part of the film. Other than that, it is missing enough comedy to make it any more than OK. Considering the budget it is a decent film, which is watchable.

20 Dec 2016 06:38:52
Snowden (2016)

The story of Edward Snowden, done by Oliver Stone as very sympathetic towards Snowden. I will not get into the debate about what Snowden did or whether or not he is a traitor, as people should make up their own mind on that, but it is worth a watch to see his side of the story. All you hear on the news is very much the other side, so it is good to see things from his view.

Personally I really enjoyed the film, it is a subject that interests me, the film never let me down. I have no idea how true to life the film is, but it certainly drew me in and made me think.

19 Dec 2016 17:10:56
I know there have been a couple of posts on Rogue One already but I saw it last night and wanted to write a review.

The Force Awakens was a major disappointment. Instead of expanding the series and giving us something new it was an unnecessary re-make of A New Hope with the finger prints of studio interference all over it. I've spent the last year with my expectations for Star Wars at a new low. I went to see Rogue One this weekend almost as a chore rather than because I was excited but I'm delighted to say that my interest has been re-kindled.

Anyone interested in the film will already know the premise so I won't go into it except to say it's a classic tale of men (and women) on a mission, it's basically the Dirty Dozen set in the Star Wars universe. This film was devised as a stand alone film and it really helps, the story is lean, the characters are just fleshed out enough that we care about them and the conclusion (to my tastes at least) is perfect. It shows that a simple story told well makes a good film.

The leads are good and Ben Mendelsohn makes a terrific villain but the standout is Alan Tudyk's K-2SO, a robot with more charisma than the entire cast of the prequels combined. Beyond that I was slightly disappointed with Donnie Yen's blind monk (mainly because I'm a huge fan of his). The character makes little sense and is only there to add some 'jedi-fu' to compensate for the lack of light sabre fights. Much better is Jiang Wen's character who is Yen's guardian. Not only is his devotion to Donnie yen's charecter well played but he carries a repeating heavy blaster that may well end up matching Chewbacca's Bowcaster for cult status.

As I said this story is pretty generic and would work in almost any setting so the fact that it is undoubtedly Star Wars gives huge credit to the production. The set and character design is top notch, my favorite thing being that all the extras have bad 70s hair cuts to link it to the first film. Beyond that the film is absolutely littered with call backs to a New Hope, some of it fan service, other parts really clever (they incorporated unused footage of rebel pilots from 1977 in the final battle). Some of it is jarring (watch out for a character mentioning an old friend) and people are split over whether one character is a technological marvel or a hideous dead eyed zombie but in general it links the film to the original trilogy exceptionally well.

There are a few niggles (Forest Whitaker using such a crazy accent that I wasn't sure if he was supposed to be speaking English or an alien language) and the heavy re-shoots make some of the editing haphazard but these didn't take anything away from my enjoyment of the film. Rogue One gives me new hope (pun totally intended) that Disney can expand the Star Wars universe in a way that adds to the series instead of diluting it, bring on Episode VIII.

21 Dec 2016 02:20:24
You've convinced me to go watch it mate. After the horror show that was a force awakens I kinda gave up on star wars.

21 Dec 2016 11:35:40
I hope you like it mate, if you don't I'll shout you some popcorn for your next visit.

21 Dec 2016 18:54:19
Dilakh i don't think you'll be disappointed.

19 Dec 2016 17:15:13
Anyone else worried about the new Bladerunner?

20 Dec 2016 04:39:20
You are Ed01?

I haven't watched the original yet, not intended to, but having Villeneuve as the director, having watched Sicario, being told about how good Arrival is, I think the film is in good hands.

I for one kinda like this kind of trailers, didn't show much and might be enough to excite the fans. I can't say I'm excited though, haven't watched the original I couldn't relate much of the scenes showed in the trailer.

{Ed001's Note - yes, very worried. The original is one of my favourite films of all time, and sequels very rarely live up to the originals at the best of times. Ford has long lost the shine he once had, he is just a doddering old man now still trying to play at being the cocky young rebel and it is embarrassing.}

20 Dec 2016 07:20:21
You are worried more about it being a sequel, and Ford in it. I understand the latter though. Like Indiana Jones and Star Wars, shouldve kept him out from those, though Star Wars seems doing good with him in it. But yeah, maybe the filmmakers wanted to capture the fans, the nostalgia, thus keeping the character still in em.

As for Bladerunner, I thought it is a remake. Since it's a sequel, I hope that I don't have to watch the first one to enjoy this, as I struggled to enjoy Force Awaken because I didn't watch any of the previous Star Wars.

{Ed001's Note - he was awful in the Force Awakens and the last Indy, just embarrassing to watch him try and run. You have never seen the other Star Wars films? Don't let Ed007 know that! You will never hear the last of it.

You really should watch the original Bladerunner - brilliant film, one of the greats.}

20 Dec 2016 16:58:19
Have to agree ed001

The very fact that ford is old is actually a huge turn off for me especially after the suggestions in the extended directors version ending.

The world suggested in the trailer also doesn't have the same 'wonder' as the original either.

Unfortunately I still think I will pay for a ticket no matter how bad the reviews are.

{Ed001's Note - I never trust reviews anyway. I remember Michael Keaton's Batman being well received, yet it is was dross. Not sure I will go to the cinema to see it, but I wil see it myself at some point. I just wish they would have the courage to just make a film without needing to do stuff like bring in ex-stars to ensure people go to see it.}

21 Dec 2016 23:19:33
As you know I will never agree on your view about Keaton's batman.

However this really does just look like a cash in, but like yourself I will see it at some point.

Would be much more interested and likely to part with cash to see the original on the big screen than this one. With that thought in mind I think that a large scale release of the original may even have more legs than this sequel.

Unfortunately the nostalgia element of Hollywood is rearing its really ugly head so often at the moment it's almost sickening. Rogue one, blade runner, alien convernant and I've even heard wind if a Spielberg supported gremlin 3 !!!

This continual churning out of second rate cash driven sequels, prequels, shared universes is what keeps pushing me towards Asian cinema. The originality of the cinematography is second to none right now and although a lot of the stories are rehashed, the cultural differences added to them, in reference to western cinema, makes then so much more watchable.

{Ed001's Note - they do a lot of sequels too mate. Sadly the world is full of cash ins.}

23 Dec 2016 14:42:08
I get that Ed but just find much more original films available from Asian cinema in general. Also find the quality of acting and ability of cinematographers a little better on average. Nothing wrong with a big hollywood blockbuster sequel, but comparing the quality of a transporter 3 to an ip man 3 suggests Hollywood cares more for the flash and not the substance.

{Ed001's Note - very true, I do agree.}

19 Dec 2016 12:30:26
Just been to see Rogue One. Wow took me back to 1977! . I won't spoil it too much but any true Star Wars will really enjoy it. Vader is really bad ass.

{Ed007's Note - I can't wait to see it but sadly I'll need to wait until the BluRay release :-( Because of my leg I can't sit for that length of time without getting up for a hobble about.}

19 Dec 2016 05:56:57
Asian Connection (2016)

This follows the bizarre trend of late with Steven Segal, where he plays a baddie who is barely in the film. Which should be a plus, if only the main stars were not such hopeless actors as well. At least the presence of Segal is not a minus, unlike usual, as his appearance as a drug lord is minimal, often limited to bizarre cut scenes of him teaching martial arts to his girlfriend. Oddly Michael Jai White has little more than a cameo role in the film as well.

The actual film itself follows two minor criminals who rob a bank, as one wants to give his girlfriend a better life. It turns out that the money they took belongs to a local drug lord, who sends his men out to find the robbers. The drug lord's number two tracks them down, but instead orders them to rob banks of his choosing, in order to make himself drug lord instead.

It is just a badly acted convoluted mess, with a few bizarre scenes but also a couple of decent martial arts set pieces. Not the worst Segal film, but not a film to make an effort to see.

18 Dec 2016 06:03:01
Money Monster (2016)

This film stars George Clooney and Julia Roberts as a TV show host and his producer. The pair of them make a TV show advising people on which stocks to invest in. Clooney, who is the star of the show, advises people to buy a stock just before the stock crashes heavily due to a computer algorithm 'glitch'. One of the people who took their advice decides to teach them a lesson by invading the studio with a bomb.

Clooney is clearly trying to send a message out with this movie, as, along with being a good film in its own right, the story is very much a warning against the way stocks and shares are traded and some of the nefarious schemes that go on behind the scenes. The story follows as they try to uncover what actually happened to cause the glitch and involves an international conspiracy.

Interestingly enough, the day after I watched this film, the news reported how a glitch made a large companies share price tumble. After watching this film, it really did make me wonder if there was more to it. Well worth a watch this film.

17 Dec 2016 09:19:23
The Shallows 2016

Im a bit of a sucker when it comes to shark films, Jaws will always be the benchmark which will probably never be surpassed, The Reef was probably the next best I've seen but apart from those 2 decent shark movies are hard to find which brings me to The Shallows starring Blake Lively. After finding the secluded beach where her deceased mum had been in her youth, BL sets out on her surfboard. After spending hours in the surf with 2 other surfers she is left alone after they leave. when she spots a dead whale her nightmare begins, stranded on a rock 200 yards from shore, circled by a great white, she must decide whether to wait for help or outthink the shark and swim for shore.
I really enjoyed this movie for the 1st hour as it was packed with tension, not knowing where the shark is ramps up the tension and keeps you on edge, however the last part of the movie just goes into stupid cheesy mode, the end being completely unrealistic.
overall a decent shark movie which was let down by the poor ending.

18 Dec 2016 06:02:45
I always hate shark movies myself. I love sharks and shark documentaries, so find the movies just utter unbelievable crap.

18 Dec 2016 06:42:12
You would be right on the majority as well ed,I loved jaws so much I think I just live in hope every shark movie I watch will live up to it and apart from the reef I'm let down every time!

{Ed001's Note - I hate Jaws, even its author hates it now mate. Benchley spends his time campaigning for shark protection now.}

18 Dec 2016 19:47:48
I think the same thing happened with the guy(whose name passes me)who used to train flipper the dolphin for the tv show,they made a film/documentary about him trying to expose dolphin culling in Japan called 'the cove' which was a very hard hitting,quite moving documentary which i highly recommend.

{Ed001's Note - it is quite sad the way Japan continues to deal so badly with endangered animal species.}

17 Dec 2016 06:11:17
Bad Moms (2016)

This was penned by the writers of the Hangover, so you can guess the level of the gags involved in it. There is nothing high brow about it, nor is it particularly well written, as the funny scenes are few and far between. Sometimes it makes you cringe, sometimes sick with the cuteness and there is the odd funny scene, but overall it is not funny enough. The mothers, while all do their roles well, are jumping back and forwards between being 'bad moms' living it up, to the very next scene being all sickly sweet with their kids.

If you want to avoid sickly sweet, then definitely avoid the end credits, which has the actresses and their real mothers discussing how good they were as parents. Overall this is just an ok movie, though anyone without kids will probably fail to understand a lot of the jokes and scenes. Having said that, it might appeal more to women, as it is so heavily female-biased, with men in this film being purely window dressing.

16 Dec 2016 06:18:14
The Infiltrator (2016)

Based on the true story of Robert Mazur, The Infiltrator is the tale of how he went after some of the biggest drug smugglers in the world and took them down by pretending to be a money launderer. Bryan Cranston, who plays Mazur, and in fact the whole crew, act well, but the story is a bit of a mess to be honest. Some of the scenes made no sense, leaving the story feeling a bit chopped apart, like there were too many scenes taken out to keep the length of it down to a manageable amount.

It is nowhere near as exciting or entertaining as Sicario, for example. It is more interesting than it is edge of the seat or a thrill ride. This is a good film, but it had the potential to be great, especially with some great acting involved.

15 Dec 2016 21:46:35
Star Wars No Spoilers!

For me this is one of my all time faves of the Star Wars series. I will warn you the five mins after the first scene are a bit mashed together but the rest is brilliant. The characters are engaging and you buy into them very quickly. The story builds rapidly after the odd beginning segments and the throwbacks to the 'episodes' are succinct and a real treat for star wars fans.

I watched this in imax 3D, only because 2d wasn't available, I'm not the biggest fan of the technology but I enjoyed it so much I will go back and watch it again.

P.s. not really a spoiler but there is no scrolling titles at the beginning, but it takes nothing away from the movie. For me those titles should be left for the episodes.

15 Dec 2016 06:00:51
Ghostbuster (reboot) (2016)

Looking past the hysteria of it being yet another reboot of an old film, one I had loved as a child, and that they had done a gender swap, the issue with this film is that it does not engender the same excitement as the original. Looking back on the original now, it is outdated and not that good anyway. It feels dated and of its time. The problem is that this reboot does nothing to move the idea forward other than the gender swap. It is not that it is that bad, it just is not good either. It is just there. There is nothing to recommend it, it is not funny intentionally and it is not bad enough to be funny unintentionally. It is just ok. The closest there is to comedy, is the gender swap thing with the guy who played Thor as the dumb secretary purely there because he looks good. It is just that average.

14 Dec 2016 05:38:43
Neighbours 2: Sorority Rising (2016)

I am not sure what this film was, though I am sure it had been listed as a comedy, I just failed to find the comedy in it. Typical of Seth Rogen, nothing funny, just cringey crap with a nasty edge to it. The storyline was terrible, it was just rubbish. Clearly the first film (which was crap but not quite this crap) did well at the box office, as this was purely a blatant attempt to cash in. Appallingly bad rubbish. Next time I will take a cheesegrater to my genitals for 90mins, it would be far more fun.

14 Dec 2016 10:22:08
I remember watching the first 5 minutes which involved a child with something and it was more disgusting than funny to me

{Ed001's Note - I think that is Seth Rogen down to a tee - more disgusting than funny. I find him extremely distasteful being honest.}

13 Dec 2016 10:07:46
Moana, watched this because my little brother and sister wanted to watch it, it's a Disney film at its heart with lots of sing songs but a few good chuckles in there too, but maybe wait till its on tv, Ed what do you make of the Rock and his acting/films?

{Ed001's Note - I hate to admit it, but I think he is a decent actor. Much better than many who have made a long career in films.}

13 Dec 2016 10:12:25
I suppose he had a bit of help coming from the wrestling entertainment industry, his singing in moana wasn't too shabby either!!!

{Ed001's Note - I have not seen it, but I hate musicals.}

13 Dec 2016 10:16:14
Don't lie Ed I know you love belting out a good ol sing song ;) jk fella

{Ed001's Note - I don't mind a sing song of course, I have a daughter so have had to get used to karaoke and stuff like that, even if it is not my thing. It is the stupid song and dance routines mid-conversation that annoy me! Makes me want to put a brick through the screen. Though I did once take a dhow cruise on a date that turned into something out of a Bollywood film. It was surreal!}

He's a machine. Fast 8, then Baywatch, Jumanji, and I'm sure there are loads more to come. I agreed with you Ed01, he's quite a good actor. I think he has moved on a lot from the typical angry mean characters seen in Scorpion King, Doom, etc.

{Ed001's Note - he was overacting at first, like he was in panto, sorry wrestling. Now he has moved on a long way. I bet we know Welsh's fave of his films though, Tooth Fairy, though I am sure he will say he only watches it for his little brother and sister....}

13 Dec 2016 12:06:14
Ow Ed. My wife and my daughters love it too. And strangely, I like it too. Haha

{Ed001's Note - thought you might.}

13 Dec 2016 12:24:21
ED1 You must be happy now knowing you're not the only one who likes Tooth Fairy eh?

{Ed001's Note - too right.}

16 Dec 2016 04:32:25
Dwayne Johnson has certain come a long way from the quite laughable overacting in the WWF/WWE.

13 Dec 2016 06:48:38
The Nice Guys (2016)

Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling are a pair of private eyes who end up working together, though they are completely mismatched. The film is set in 1970s Los Angeles and they end up on the search for a missing girl, in a case involving porn stars, eccentric goons, strippers and government conspiracies.

This is a really enjoyable film, an action comedy of the Lethal Weapon variety, with both Gosling and Crowe excellent. I am surprised this did not do better at the box office, as it is one of the better films either actor have done recently. While no classic, it was very good and well worth watching.

12 Dec 2016 09:01:00
Keanu (2016)

This is difficult to explain so it makes any sense at all, but this is the story of two friends trying to get back their stolen kitten. It really sounds stupid and, to be quite honest, it is silly in the extreme, but it works. It is utterly ridiculous and over the top but well worth a watch. It is far from the greatest comedy, but it is a good comedy with a fair few genuine laughs.

12 Dec 2016 04:21:37
Innkeepers. To those who enjoy horror films, I would recommend this. It's not recent, and I decided to watch this because just read something about this young director Ti West and also Ed01 praised one of his films.

Nothing special about this film, and it never tried to be one, and for me that is the film's strength. The story build-up was very slow, but in between there were enough (I couldn't find a word to use here, sorry) that kept me in the seat until the end.

For years, I found it difficult to find some really good horror films. The Ring and Babadook are those super rare horror films that are for me, really good horror films. Innkeepers definitely not great, but really worth to watch.

16 Dec 2016 20:49:27
Hey Haizan horror has always been my favourite genre since my cousin sat me down to watch a nightmare on elm street when I was 6,scared me to death but I was hooked on horror from that moment,anyway if u want some of my recommendations I'll split them into horror categories,
Vampire:the lost boys
werewolf:silver bullet
Horror/thriller:misery
Animal:Jaws,the reef,burning bright,rogue
Cheesy horror:wrong turn
Home invasion horror:the strangers,your next,kidnapped,the people under the stairs.
Gorey horror:switchblade romance,inside,martyrs,hostel
Psychological horror:the shining
Paranormal horror:the entity,the changeling,poltergeist
Possesion horror:the exorcism of Emily rose,the possesion of Michael king,the exorcist,evil dead
Zombie horror:dawn of the dead
I'm sure there's loads more i'm forgeting,special mention to the 1st saw movie,the end made my jaw drop,forget the rest though!

11 Dec 2016 09:37:03
Hardcore Henry (2015)

WTF was this utter crap? I had no idea what it was meant to be when I sat down to watch it and I wish I had known as I would have avoided seeing it. Utter trash. It was like watching someone play an FPS game but made it into a film with the people who had played it. Except that would probably be better. If you are one of those that loves to watch those boring as hell 'let's play' videos on youareatube, where someone plays a game so you don't have to, then you might actually like this. However, if you have a life and prefer playing them yourself and watching well directed movies, then avoid this trash at all costs.

13 Dec 2016 22:53:39
I don't know about you ed but watching it hurt my eyes. Painful movie watching experience

{Ed001's Note - one of the worst films ever. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It has really tested my ability to decribe something so bad without swearing!}

11 Dec 2016 08:07:12
Blood Father (2016)

Mel Gibson plays a former criminal, from a biker gang, who has tried to go straight and is getting help to recover from his own addiction issues, when his estranged daughter re-enters his life on the run from a drug gang led by her boyfriend. Gibson's character protects his daughter and they have to run for their lives.

I recommend this film, it is a very good action movie which is well worth a watch. While Gibson has fallen out of the Hollywood mainstream in recent years, some of his films have returned to the quality that made his name in the first place. This is a really enjoyable film, with characters that have flaws, but it is very easy to empathise with them.

10 Dec 2016 14:54:43
Just finished watching I Saw the Devil, again. Any posters would like to share their thoughts on it? My wife couldn't stand watching it because of the violence, some of my mates didn't like it either.

16 Dec 2016 20:53:19
Absolutely brilliant,none stop brutality, not for the faint hearted,I'm not easily shocked at horror movies but that scene in the taxi was just brutal!

10 Dec 2016 09:51:44
Lake Eerie (2016)

I've watched some rubbish in my time but this one is by far the worst film I have ever watched. i'm not really into these type of films but decided to give it a go and was a total waste of time. The acting is the worst acting you will ever see, I think even I could do a better job. Avoid at all costs.

10 Dec 2016 13:16:41
Ever seen open water? If you have and this is still the worst movie you have seen you have my deepest sympathy!

16 Dec 2016 20:55:44
I love a good shark movie but my God your right,open water is terrible!try the reef,similar story line but my God it's loads better,made me feel quite tense in places!

10 Dec 2016 08:55:09
Don't Think Twice (2016)

This was dog turd, so boring I could not sit through it all. I do not want to waste any more time even discussing this dross. Just avoid it.

10 Dec 2016 08:36:35
Absolutely Fabulous The Movie (2016)

My parents wanted to watch this as they both loved the show. I have to be honest I was not a fan, but thought I would give the movie a try as so many people keep saying the programme is great. The film was crap, utter dross, worse than I remember the TV show, which I hated. It was not just me either, my parents were not impressed, so this has to go down as an avoid.

09 Dec 2016 18:57:07
True Memoirs Of An International Assassin (2016)

An action comedy starring Kevin James is not the most appetising of prospects, so sitting down to watch this did not fill me with enthusiasm to be perfectly honest. This is the story of an author, played by Kevin James, who writes a novel about assassins. His publisher decides it will sell better by changing the genre from fiction to non-fiction. Worringly for the author, his diligent research has left the book seeming real enough for people to really believe he is an assasin.

Now I have to admit that this was nothing like as bad as I expected. Not rolling in the aisles funny. Actually it was not really raising more than a smile, but it was a decent enough film. Compared to the dog turd that was Paul Blart: Mall Cop (1 & 2), this is sheer genius. If you are stuck for something to watch, this is not going to ruin your evening, but do not expect to be holding your sides rolling around the floor.

09 Dec 2016 11:16:10
ED1 Spiderman trailer? yay or nay? It gets a capital YAY from me

{Ed001's Note - this one:

If so I am really excited about this one.}

09 Dec 2016 11:58:38
Nay for me. Garfield's films really have ruined my interest towards Spidey.

{Ed001's Note - Tom Holland was excellent in Civil War and he played the character like it is in the comic books, rather than the dross of Garfield and that other guy before him.}

09 Dec 2016 12:44:43
This looks awesome, The Garfield attempt was shocking. Didn't mind the first Spider-Man movie, it was 2 & 3 I had an issue with.

Marvel are spoiling us next year, this Thor and GotG. DC don't stand a chance.

{Ed001's Note - GotG2 is the other one I am really looking forward to. The first one was brilliant fun.}

09 Dec 2016 15:16:27
Yup that's the one, I think this spidey captures all the right elements, the boyish behaviour especially that was so lacking last time

{Ed001's Note - he is much better.}

09 Dec 2016 18:35:10
Also it has Marisa tomei in it.so going to watch it anyway

10 Dec 2016 06:29:54
I enjoyed the 1st 2 spiderman films with toby maguire, the 3rd one was naff. Did u not like them Ed?

{Ed001's Note - I thought they were terrible, and had to watch them a few times as my daughter loved them when they came out. Awful movies that got worse with each viewing.}

10 Dec 2016 08:18:18
Maybe if it had steven seagal in the lead you would of liked it more. 😉

{Ed001's Note - oh god no. Unless he died. I did enjoy seeing him die in that film with Kurt Russell as US President. I think it was Russell anyway.}

09 Dec 2016 06:23:03
Dog Eat Dog (2016)

This is one of the worst openings to a film I have ever seen, Willem Defoe is utterly wasted in this dross. I can only say avoid at all costs. It was 'art', rather than well directed story telling. When you have a terrible actor like Nicolas Cage in a film, it needs to be good to make up for his lack of talent. This is not good. The direction is awful, to the point I could not tell you what happened after the opening scenes as I had completely lost interest and it was just on while I ignored it!

09 Dec 2016 05:02:58
I'm wondering what is happening with Samuel L. Jackson. I came across some really cheap crap films, like direct-to-video sort of films, with him in them. Is he becoming like Cuba Gooding Jr?

09 Dec 2016 06:22:52
Nicolas Cage is doing the same oddly. It is particularly odd in Cage's case with his uncle being FFC he is normally brought in to big budget films to sell them to backers. Not like he needs the money, so no idea why he is just doing dross now.

09 Dec 2016 11:08:50
I always thought the likes of Cage and Willis, they are those who seem desperate for jobs thus starring on those craps. But Jackson seems still get jobs for blockbusters, that's why it's kinda strange for me.

08 Dec 2016 13:38:52
Out of curiosity has anyone seen along came a spider, one of my all time favourite movies. Only reason I ask is because I wonder if anyone had any similar movies they could recommend. Thriller/true story.

{Ed001's Note - I have seen this a while ago now, wasn't it an Alex Cross film? Isn't it the prequel to Alex Cross that was released a couple of years ago?}

08 Dec 2016 21:26:06
Yeah it was an Alex Cross, not sure the Alex cross movie though is related to the original two. Along came a spider and kiss the girls, the new movie was just using the same character.

More proof that Hollywood is refusing to use their imagination and just rebooting or rehashing anything that has had some sort of a success previously.

{Ed001's Note - I actually googled it afterwards and IMDB etc list Along Came A Spider as a prequel to Alex Cross. Not sure whether that is true or not, or if they are just linking them because they use the same character. I never realised Kiss The Girls was an Alex Cross film too.}

08 Dec 2016 22:52:54
Maybe it's just my selective memory and don't want to link the three. As I could watch the other two multiple times, Alex cross however I won't ever be re-watching,

{Ed001's Note - I have to agree, the Morgan Freeman ones were much better, though none of them are really my thing.}

08 Dec 2016 05:48:50
ID2: Shadwell Army (2016)

This is not my usual kind of thing, a film about football hooligans, but the original is being called a classic these days so I thought I would check this out. It really was not what I expected at all. It is about Shadwell's hooligan firm, a made up Premier League team, but it is far more than just that.

A young British copper, Mo is from an Asian Muslim family and rising fast within the police force. He is set the task of infiltrating Shadwell's hooligan firm, a firm with a significant racist element, to make things more difficult.

ID2 covers topics such as extremism, racism and terrorist attacks. It is not just a Green Street clone. It is much better than that. It is thought provoking, disturbing at times, with a lot of depth to it. Well worth a watch.

08 Dec 2016 09:40:56
I have a notepad open on my computer with a to watch list now, this does sound good. I don't mind these sort of films, not my favorite or anything but I didn't mind Green Street it was just that American lad did my head in. The main two upto now would be the football factory and even more so Rise of the Footsoldier. I'll give this one a go.

{Ed001's Note - as a rule I hate them, as they glorify hooliganism, when they should be showing what utter morons and vile pricks they are. I have seen small children and old men and women attacked by those cretins. The world would be a better place without them.}

08 Dec 2016 09:57:15
When you say it like that I do agree. I don't mind the films but know what your saying, the people they base them on are nothing but absolute scum. Where I live there's been a gang/group of these idiots for the football team and let's be honest they don't really care about the football team and the majority of them are banned from the stadium, they're more about hatred, racist scum who have no respect for others. More bothered about going to the pub during home games to start fights with away fans. It's absolutely horrendous. Bare in mind these kind of people as you know yourself are your typical kind of EDL supporters as well so it says it all really. Racist thugs should all be dealt with properly. There's far too much of it still and it's all over the world.

What also really annoys me is, obviously these kind of groups have certain pubs they can go into (most of which they're banned) why the hell are they allowed in ANY public house? I just don't understand it, police should be saying they're simply not allowed anywhere near the pubs / stadiums etc. But they're allowed in certain other pubs where bar staff will back them up, really winds me up.

{Ed001's Note - the bar staff or owner is usually involved mate.}

08 Dec 2016 11:54:27
The notepad is still open? Put Man from Nowhere in it. You won't be dissappointed. (I have been hawking around about this film for quite some time, I think I'm obsessed)

08 Dec 2016 15:04:38
Lol I love that film Haizan mate, absolutely brilliant.

08 Dec 2016 00:42:29
Ok so who is your favorite actor?

I know it's a difficult one and I can't choose just one so will list a few.

Denzel Washington - just to mention a few of his brilliant films, American Gangster, Training day, Man on Fire & Deja Vu come to mind.

Leonardo DiCaprio - everything he touches he seems to make a masterpiece - The wolf of wallstreet, Inception, The beach, the departed, Blood diamond & Gang's of New york. I heard the Revenant was good? still not seen that one.

I love my gangster kinda films so have to mention Robert De niro but not just for the gangster films he's done all sorts hasn't he, top actor but seems like an utter tool in real life (not that I know him) few films I love him in - The deer Hunter. Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Casino, Heat*, The untouchables - Got raging Bull a few years ago and it's yet to be watched lol

Will leave it with one more, Al Pacino, his part in Scarface was probably one of my favorites. Not to mention (again heat) - Donnie Brasco, Carlitos way, Godfather 2, devils advocate.

We could go on forever but I think them 4 are my top upto now, but there's loads, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hnaks, Sean Penn. please add more to my list lol.

{Ed001's Note - Denzel is always excellent, I like Clive Owen and Robert Downey Jr. Off the top of my head I can't think of anyone else.}

08 Dec 2016 07:25:38
1. DiCaprio. You should watch The Revenant. I love him in Blood Diamond and Body of Lies as well.

2. Jeff Bridges. I love his accent, and that was the main reason I enjoyed R.I.P.D. eventhough I have to admit it was kinda crap.

3. Denzel Washington definitely. Particularly Man on Fire, Deja Vu and American Gangster.

4. Tom Hardy. For me he is a superb actor especially in Warrior.

I don't know why but I kinda hate Tom Hanks, with no apparent reasons.

{Ed001's Note - I forgot to agree on DiCaprio, he has been excellent in the films I have seen. I like Tom Hardy, he is always good. I also agree on Hanks, can't stand him. He is a terrible actor imo. I don't think he has moved on from the character he played in Big.}

08 Dec 2016 08:53:29
To be fair I do know what you guys are saying in regards to Hanks, a few of his good films for me was Saving Private Ryan, Forest Gump and Philadelphia. But yeah it has to be said he's done some absolutely terrible films.

Tom Hardy I agree is excellent - Brilliant in Legend, really enjoyed that film and like you say Warrior another great film.

I have to add Jack Nicholson to the list for me as well.

As for ones I don't like the main 2 are Bruce Willis and Russel Crowe, can't stand either especially Bruce Willis something about him winds me up. Russel Crowe has no doubt done some good films but something about him I don't like.

{Ed001's Note - John Travolta is one that I really can't stand, there is something slimy and disgusting about him. Not just because of the Scientology thing either, just him, he makes me want to vomit.}

08 Dec 2016 09:13:45
Oh God yeah, Travolta is just horrible I can't stand him or his acting - I almost forgot he existed (on purpose), absolute tool another one as bad for me would be Steven Seagal he just makes me cringe I don't know how the hell he made it famous.

{Ed001's Note - Nicolas Cage is another who is crap. Though it is easy to understand how he made it....}

08 Dec 2016 09:24:44
Don't forget Sandler and Vaughn.

{Ed001's Note - Jack Black too.}

08 Dec 2016 09:35:19
Please leave him out of this. Haha

{Ed001's Note - I don't know what you could mean.... ;-)

08 Dec 2016 09:36:38
Hugh Grant as well, for the bad list. Well, Bad is a compliment.

{Ed001's Note - I don't mind him, he just makes crap films rather than he is crap imo.}

08 Dec 2016 13:37:41
Anyone who's seen Philadelphia and says that Tom Hanks can't act needs help. The guy was f***ing brilliant in that, as too was Denzel Washington.

I'd also like to add that the majority, if not all the extras were aids victims themselves and most had passed on when the film was released.

{Ed001's Note - was it that he was good or that the film was that good? I haven't seen it, so I am simply asking, as it is something I have no interest in watching to be perfectly honest.}

08 Dec 2016 15:03:06
Even though the story was good, the movie its self couldn't be rated so highly if the acting wasn't so good.

I mean look at the movie based on Red Faction, it's a great story but the acting is laughable, so it goes down as a terrible B movie. Same with a lot of others, story alone doesn't compensate for lacking of acting in my opinion anyway.

There are movies that have been saved because of great acting, but very few, if any that have been saved by a great storyline.

Just my opinion of course.

{Ed001's Note - I think that depends on whether the story is something that gets to you in some way. Either you identify with it or it tugs at your heart strings, such as Philadelphia must. Those kind of stories can keep your interest and a good director can hide acting deficiencies and make a terrible actor bearable or even good. If an actor does 20 films and you can only come up with one or two to suggest they are great, that tells you there is a good chance it was not the actor that was great, I think.}

08 Dec 2016 15:09:38
To be honest ed1, it's something I would've never been interested in either but gave it a watch because one night a good few years ago there was bugger all on TV and my dad decided we should watch it and tbh, it's his best film and he will never do any better, he was fantastic in it. He isn't the best but in that film he's top class. Lol you have a lot to watch mate but if you ever get a spare couple of hours give it a go, definitely worth it.

{Ed001's Note - maybe one day, but I never get a spare couple of hours.}

09 Dec 2016 10:00:37
Lol I can imagine mate.

09 Dec 2016 11:15:42
Ryan Reynolds and Joseph Gordon Levitt but only because JG looked good in inception

07 Dec 2016 23:14:25
Apologies in advance if this is a stupid questions but is this strictly a movie talk site or are tv shows allowed?

If so curious if you've seen westworld? Initially thought it was a show that looked good but lacked quality writing but the later half of the season is phenomenal and has one of the best finales I've seen

{Ed001's Note - there is a TV site in the list mate TV chat site

08 Dec 2016 05:49:15
sorry wrong link above forgot the http:// bit, this is the correct one - TV chat site

08 Dec 2016 12:27:00
Cheers ed

{Ed001's Note - you are very welcome mate, be nice to see you on there.}

08 Dec 2016 13:31:55
Ace! Another of these talk sites to have a look at.

07 Dec 2016 14:01:33
Just done watching London Has Fallen. The initial wish to watch this was to kill an hour plus with my wife while enjoying our pizza, and wow, both of us agreed that it is a really bad film we felt we have ruined this suppose-to-be pleasurable evening to enjoy our humble meal.

From the story, the dialogue, the actions, the cheap effects. I think i've said enough.

{Ed007's Note - My Mrs has said she wants to to watch that but it'll be upstairs while I'm downstairs watching the football now.}

07 Dec 2016 14:18:31
Ed07, get yourself upstairs and save her.

{Ed007's Note - I bet she says it's quite good, my Mrs has honking taste in films lol}

09 Dec 2016 10:03:26
Not even your missus would like this film, it is dog turd.

07 Dec 2016 12:50:20
Hell or High Water (2016)

Two brothers, one an ex-con and one a divorced father, go on a crime spree, robbing banks to save the family ranch. They attract the attention of a pair of Texas Rangers, who chase them down. Chris Pine and Ben Foster play the brothers and Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham are the Rangers.

There is a lot more to the film than a simply synopsis can say without giving out spoilers. This is a good film, enough action to please an action fan, some excellent dialogue, particularly between the two Rangers, and plot twists to interest those who want a film to make them think.

A good film on a limited budget, that is not all about effects, it is about the story. Well worth a watch, though it is never going to be a classic or win Oscars, it is just a good solid film.

07 Dec 2016 21:25:25
Yeah good shout, watched this about a week ago, great film.

07 Dec 2016 23:17:16
Watched it a few weeks ago and was surprised. Very good film and dialogue between Jeff Bridges and his partner is superb.

Also the ex cons brother is a great character! Side question ed have you seen Bronson with Tom Hardy? Mates hated it but personally thought it was a great film

09 Dec 2016 10:04:11
I thought Hardy was good but the film itself was horrible, so bizarre and I couldn't sit through it to the end.

07 Dec 2016 06:42:22
Hands Of Stone (2016)

The story of two legendary figures from boxing, Roberto Duran and his trainer Ray Arcel. Roberto De Niro returns to boxing films to make this biopic, playing Duran's trainer Arcel, who turns Duran from a street fighter into a top class boxer. The boxing is pretty much incidental to this film, it is very focused on those two and their relationship, plus, which is probably the thing which makes Duran stick in people's minds, the build up and fights with Sugar Ray Leonard.

It did also give some idea of the state Duran's home country, Panama, was in at the time, and how the rise from poverty caused Duran's ego to rise also. Duran, Arcel and Sugar Ray Leonard were all excellent, but the boxing scenes were not really the best, though that never stopped the Rocky movies! Personally I really enjoyed this film, as all I had known about Duran before that was that he had said 'no mas' and returned to his corner in the middle of the rematch with Leonard.

Now I feel like I at least understand, to a degree, what happened that night. The pressure Duran was under, as the symbol, almost the living embodiment of Panama to so many of its people. It is no wonder he cracked and wanted no more.

06 Dec 2016 13:50:54
So because it's that time of year. Name your top 3 films that get you into the Xmas spirit. mine are
Home alone 1
Die hard 1
Santa clause the movie (I know it's terrible, but loved it since I was a kid)

06 Dec 2016 14:23:37
I don't celebrate Christmas, but Home Alone 1 is truly nostalgic. And I remembered when I was a kid, Lethal Weapon 1 will be aired on TV on this time of years before Christmas.

06 Dec 2016 16:10:33
Good shout with leathel weapon. Absolute classic.

06 Dec 2016 20:36:54
Home Alone 2
Trading Places
Scrooged

Honorable mentions to Elf, Christmas Carol(Jim Carey one) and Spartacus.

07 Dec 2016 06:42:13
When I was a kid, it was always Star Wars, the original one

07 Dec 2016 09:58:57
It's a wonderful life (old but bloody good)

Lethal weapon is definitely a good shout, might have to do all 4 of them again this week maybe now.

Im kinda a scrooge when it comes to Christmas but used to love the home alones, daft but good and that one with Arnie in it, can't remember the name but he's wanting that action figure.

07 Dec 2016 09:59:21
it came to me - jingle all the way lol

07 Dec 2016 17:54:31
No one said E.T yet? That's always on at Christmas.

{Ed007's Note - E.T is still one of my top 5 films of all time. I'm not much of a Christmas person though so I don't have a favourite Christmas movie.}

06 Dec 2016 10:00:05
Line Walker (2016)

This is a Cantonese movie based on a TV series. The story is that there were a load of police agents embedded deep cover but, in order to save them from discovery, their files were wiped. All of the agents were believed to have been recovered, then one more makes himself known. What follows is a film that tries to keep you guessing about who is who, as the police try to help the agent uncover a plot.

The action is good, but the story is confusing. I saw someone questioning online if sections had been cut from the movie in post-production and, on reflection, I have to say that seems like the best explanation for what is going on with this film. It seemed to jump around with no way of following what was going on at times, nor any idea of why things happened. Sadly this does affect the enjoyment of the movie. It ends up being just a popcorn flick to see the action sequences. Maybe it would help to have seen the TV show, but I have no idea, as I have not seen it myself. All in all, just an average action film to pass the time.

07 Dec 2016 00:41:32
You seems really into Chinese films Ed01. I stopped watching them actually, I remembered there were these years it was being flooded with films with loads of crap action scenes (such as heist with super high security facilities, and some others), I found them no longer appealing. How's the quality in general right now? Most of your reviews on these films, it sound like they are getting better.

{Ed001's Note - very variable. Lots of dross, but the budgets are getting bigger so they are becoming more comparable with Hollywood.}

07 Dec 2016 10:05:12
I would've never watched something like this in the past, had to be the hollywood kind of film until I met my wife (who is Chinese) and your right ed1, there's a lot of rubbish but some good stuff as well.

Speaking of the foreign stuff - It's a TV series and I couldn't recommend it enough ' Gomorrah ' It's italian, if your into gangster films / series this is the series for you, only 2 seasons at the minute but another 2 to be done. I love my gangster kind of stuff and loved Sopranos, Boardwalk empire, Scarface, Goodfellas, Casino, Godfather the list goes on but TV series wise, nothing has anything on Gomorrah imo.

{Ed001's Note - have you tried Peaky Blinders if you like gangster stuff?}

07 Dec 2016 16:33:23
Gomorrah

07 Dec 2016 19:46:50
I still having tried peaky blinders ed1, been told to do so but never got round to it. Will have to give it a go.

{Ed001's Note - stick with it mate, it is one of those shows that gets better as it goes, like The Blacklist.}

06 Dec 2016 08:32:32
Just finished watching Collateral last night. Didn't know it is that good. I have no idea why I avoided watching it in the past years. My main problem is the camera. Some of the scenes looked cheap like being recorded by mobile phone or handycam.

Jamie Foxx was superb in it as kinda nerd guy or something like that.

{Ed001's Note - I quite enjoyed that film as well, Foxx is one of those actors that does a good job in anything.}

06 Dec 2016 08:41:26
This film is one of the rare action films that didn't rely on explosions, car chases or effects, but through the dialogues and acting. Really good film. Have to watch it again.

{Ed001's Note - it is well written.}

06 Dec 2016 13:47:20
I would say that collateral is Tom cruises best film he's done. Such a good hit man in it.

Goldstone (2016)

An Australian movie with indigenous, alcoholic, detective Jay Swan heading to a small town in the middle of nowhere, Goldstone, to search for a missing girl. Treated with suspicion and hatred by the locals, seemingly because he is indigenous, he gets off on the wrong foot with the local police. The investigation uncovers a major web of crime and a conspiracy involving local dignitaries. Jay Swan has to pull himself together and settle his differences with one of the local cops to deliver justice to the town of Goldstone. It is a sequel to a film call Mystery Road.

Never having seen (or heard of) Mystery Road, I cannot comment on how the two films compare or how it works as a sequel, but I did enjoy it as a standalone movie. It is not fast, it slowly builds up towards a big finish, but it is interesting and kept me watching all the way through. The acting was mainly good, the story was good, with plenty of intrigue, though some of the characters felt a bit over the top, like cartoon characters, at times. I enjoyed it and would recommend it if you are looking for something different to watch.

05 Dec 2016 18:55:09
Sausage party a film bringing life the thoughts of food in a supermarket. I'll be honest I just had the movie in the background but it was funny in parts and a typical Seth rogen movie. If you have a spare hour and a half and want some mindless fun this is the film for you.

{Ed001's Note - is that the one where they want to be taken home as they don't realise they are going to be eaten?}

05 Dec 2016 19:42:50
Yeah the basic principle is they all want to be selected to go to the 'great beyond'. Very little story but you don't watch a Seth rogen movie for his story telling.

06 Dec 2016 05:57:53
I have seen it, but I did not enjoy it. Thought it was typical of Rogen - not funny at all.

06 Dec 2016 08:17:25
Him and Adam Sandler.

{Ed001's Note - Adam Sandler just does the same things in every film. Happy Gilmore was good, because it was the first time I saw him, but I have seen all his gags now and he is just annoying.}

06 Dec 2016 08:25:26
Yeah. Annoying is the word. Jack Black, on the other hand, is hilarious. My favourite is Nacho Libre, the most enjoying stupid film ever.

{Ed001's Note - seriously? He is in the same group for me. Probably the worst of the lot for me.}

06 Dec 2016 08:34:13
Haha yeah seriously Ed. I never missed most of Jack Black's films actually.

{Ed001's Note - I always make a point of missing them.}

05 Dec 2016 06:41:36
Army Of One (2016)

Based on a true story of an American (played by the ever-rubbish Nicolas Cage) who heads off on his own to Afghanistan to track down Osama Bin Laden. I really cannot stress enough how much you need to avoid this. Utter tripe. I do not know how much I actually bothered watching, as I was so bored I ended up working while it was playing in the background.

04 Dec 2016 20:43:14
Who Gets The Dog (2016)

This film claims to be a comedy about a couple who split up and then fight over custody of their dog. What it actually is would be better described as something the dog dropped out of its backside during filming. Terrible film with nothing funny in the first half hour. I was too bored to stomach any more.

04 Dec 2016 19:59:37
Just watched masterminds, a true story about a bank heist in America. With the cast, I thought the movie would be hilarious but the funniest bits are the outakes. However the film holds an intrigue from the beginning about where the story is going mainly due to be not being familiar with the original story.
I would recommend the movie just don't expect a laugh a minute.

{Ed001's Note - I have seen it too, just haven't had a chance to write a review yet. I wasn't impressed with the film, though the story is really interesting, just badly made.}

04 Dec 2016 20:38:49
I'd be interested to see your thoughts ed, never really got going but the story above all kept be hooked. It had the cast and story to be a real hit unfortunately just an average movie, but like I said I would recommend it to people for the story above all, although you could just skip the film and read up on the subject.

{Ed001's Note - I would recommend doing that instead, but then I am not a fan of the cast. Especially that Zach Galifianakis. I just find him annoying rather than funny.}

04 Dec 2016 14:27:00
Hacksaw ridge isn't out yet over here. But the reviews I've seen from America have been amazing and even oscar worthy. If anyone loves a good "real" war film that shows the brutal truths then this will be for you I'm hoping. He may be off his head (Mel Gibson) but with his 10 years or so out of the scene has probably done him the world of good.

04 Dec 2016 14:42:17
Haven't watch it yet, too. I'm sure it is a good one. Me and my wife enjoyed Apocalypto so much I'm sure Gibson will deliver just as good as in his previous movies.

05 Dec 2016 12:50:42
Any of you guys have watched Blood Father? Just found out it won't be released here in my country. Guess I need to wait for the DVD or for it to be aired on HBO or Fox then.

{Ed001's Note - good film mate, I really enjoyed it. It is on the list of films I have seen that I have to get round to reviewing. Taking a while as I got a bit lax and didn't keep up with them as I watched them.}

05 Dec 2016 13:12:26
Off topic Ed01, have you watched BMW's The Escape? Having watched previous BMW shorts, I didn't enjoy this one as much as the previous.

{Ed001's Note - no mate, I have never seen a BMW short sorry. Not even sure what they are to be honest.}

05 Dec 2016 13:24:20
If you have time you can try to check em out, Ed01. Nothing spectacular though, but they are a series of shorts directed by different directors; John Woo, Joe Carnahan and the late Tony Scott with the same actor Clive Owen. Last time I downloaded them from a BMW site. I believe they can be found in YouTube now. The new one is on Youtube.

{Ed001's Note - ah ok, I might check them out, I like Clive Owen, he is a big Liverpool fan.}

05 Dec 2016 13:28:46
Whoa. I didn't know that. Thanks!!!

{Ed001's Note - when he can he will put in some reference to the club. In one film I remember him having LFC pictures and memorabilia on the wall of his office. I like to look to see if I can spot anything like that when I watch his films. It is like looking for the Stan Lee spot in a Marvel movie.}

The Monkey King 2 (2016)

A Chinese film based on a famous Chinese book, Journey To The West, but Westerners will probably better know it from the Japanese TV Show, titled Monkey or Monkey Magic in some countries. This film is very similar to the TV show, with Monkey, the Pig and the Fish protecting a travelling Buddhist monk who is heading across China to retrieve sacred scriptures.

I have to be honest, I was a huge fan of the TV show when I was a kid, I was hoping this film would take me on a nostalgic trip back to those days. In some respects it did. However it was not as good as my memories of watching the TV show. In many respects this film was frustrating and confusing, with an ending that really was no ending. It was clearly left open for future films of the Monkey King.

As a film in its own right, it was ok, it was entertaining and was clearly intended as an action comedy, though a fair bit of the comedy does tend to get lost in translation. The overall experience though is a decent film to waste a couple of hours with, but nothing special.

03 Dec 2016 07:58:14
I just watched Train to Busan.

Honestly, I was a bit dissappointed. I'm not saying that it is not a good film, but maybe I was expecting more.

World War Z and 28 Weeks Later are still my favourite zombie movies. This one, OK, but just OK for me.

{Ed001's Note - sorry to hear that. I am intending to watch that in the next few days, and Man From Nowhere, that you recommended. I would have watched Man From Nowhere already, but I downloaded it initially without subtitles, like a divvy. My Korean turns out to be nowhere near as good as I thought, and I thought it was non-existent!}

03 Dec 2016 08:12:49
If you are to ask me Ed01, go for Man from Nowhere first before Train to Busan.

Before I bought this, I was thinking and thinking whether to buy this or Jason Bourne. I should've gone for Jason Bourne.

{Ed001's Note - I liked Bourne and I will have to re-download Man From Nowhere, due to the stupidity of not checking which version I got.}

03 Dec 2016 18:19:07
28 Weeks or 28 Days HaizanMSS?

Personally, I preferred 28 Days Later, I felt it had more to it, also better quality with the a lower budget.

{Ed001's Note - I am with you, I thought 28 Weeks Later was very poor.}

03 Dec 2016 23:59:11
Yeah hsf, I meant 28 Days. But 28 Weeks was the first film I saw Imogen Poots in it, she's so gorgeous I couldn't help myself enjoying it. And she was the only reason I enjoyed watching Need for Speed. Haha

02 Dec 2016 06:16:14
Street (2015)

This is a martial arts movie about a young lad named Street who is given the chance to train with a world class coach and with top class fighters after a chance meeting in a store, where he protects the coach from an attack by Russian mobsters. The Russian mobsters force Street to part in underground cage fights for him or they will hurt his family.

This is a terrible movie, even as a martial arts film alone, the martial arts are badly choreographed, very badly, and so it does not work on that level alone. Then there is the story, which is awful, so full of plotholes and ridiculous attempts at twists which do not work. The sound is hopeless, obscuring much of the dialogue with music for no reason. Worse is the acting, which is dreadful.

I was unable to watch it all the way through, it was so bad I gave up after an hour. There is nothing to recommend this film in all honesty. It is not even bad enough to make you laugh at it. It is just cack. Avoid.

01 Dec 2016 15:00:46
Hi ed it's a very disturbing film but just wondering if you had any information on a Serbian film if you've seen or heard of it. It's one of those films you and your mates sit and watch because you've heard it's brutal. I tried to look up info on it years ago when I seen it and seen that it possibly had a deeper meaning to do with actual politics in serbia but from the directors
Cut version I'm failing to see it and just see it being a sick disturbing film.

{Ed007's Note - I have heard quite a bit about it but never watched it mate. Have you watched what's said to be the uncut version on Youtube?*

https://goo.gl/aZ39KB

I've always held the opinion that once the critics start spouting off about hidden meanings in films it's just an excuse to cover up for a shitty movie. I reckon you're closer to the truth than the critics that it's just a sick film.

*That video is strictly over 18s only and even at that I'd still advise using your discretion about watching it hence I didn't embed it.

01 Dec 2016 20:24:47
Ye the uncut version is the one I watched very very disturbing i'm lucky enough to not be emotionally
Attached to films like that but showing this to any woman I think could cause a few breaks downs lol.

{Ed007's Note - Really? Guess that's me and the Mrs viewing for Saturday night. I put on David Lynch's Eraserhead back when we were in our teens and she still brings it up about how I made her watch it :-D

02 Dec 2016 01:11:32
That film is sick. I still couldn't accept if there's any reason or excuse to make such a film. I understand that maybe the people wanted to show something that is truly happening in their world or whatever, but by making this with such graphics, I can't accept it. I believe there's another way to depict such things, moral ways.

Those who haven't watch it yet, please dont. I love gore, i'm an avid reader of a gore site, but this is just too much.

{Ed001's Note - having been told about this film by Ed007, I will be going out of my way to avoid it!}

01 Dec 2016 21:33:10
Really mate everything sexually you can think of that's illegal is in this from rape, incest to things that Gary glitter would've been proud of.

{Ed007's Note - Is it really that bad? Over the years I found that so called banned films were always a bit of an anti-climax, Clockwork Orange, The Exorcist, I Spit on Your Grave etc but I think I'll draw a line at paedophilia unless it's in something like Spotlight.}

03 Dec 2016 18:22:09
Horrible movie, really is horrible.

{Ed007's Note - I want to know what Haizan is watching, is gore stuff like the Scream movies or Freddy Krueger and that to you young 'uns?}

04 Dec 2016 00:09:05
Ed7, I have no problem with the gores in it. The gores in it were just OK, some even plain stupid. But when gores added with child rape (not just child rape, there were even a scene of newborn baby rape!), incest (raping own son!) and those for me are just too much.

{Ed007's Note - It sounds disgusting but I wasn't meaning that mate, I was meaning what 'gore' films are you into, does it mean old hacker/slasher films and B movies, like Driller Killer etc? And what the hell goes on on a gore website? :-D

04 Dec 2016 00:34:54
Ha sorry Ed07. To be honest, I didn't get to watch many of that kind of films. I enjoyed Saw though, up until no 3, I couldn't stand watching Scream or Halloween, and in the past I've watched Faces of Death. It wasn't actually a film though, more like a documentary.

{Ed007's Note - I liked a couple of the Saw films because of the psychological edge to them playing a game but I'm not a fan of things like Scream and Halloween although the Mrs loves flicks like that. And that Human Centipede!! Bleurgh!!
Was Faces of Death good, I've heard of it and seen it on a few movie sites but never watched it.

04 Dec 2016 21:33:06
Just remembered Dead Alive, quite gross and gory film, and funny too, but it's quite an old movie. And there was this movie about a dentist I can't remember the title.

Faces of Death 1 was ok for me. That and Saving Private Ryan were actually the films that made me started watching gore videos and images. It is a documentary with videos of real gores happening around the world. If that is what you are looking for, I believe nowadays you can find lots of that kind of videos with more violent gores than the ones in it.

Anthropoid (2016)

Operation Anthropoid was a World War 2 operation, which was intended to assassinate a high ranking Nazi, Reinhard Heydrich, who was the main architect of the 'Final Solution' and an SS General. It succeeded, and Heydrich was the highest ranking Nazi to be killed by Allied actions during WW2. This is the story of the operation and stars Cillian Murphy.

I will be honest and say I am not able to give a truly unbiased opinion, as my uncle was involved in the film, and had a small role in it, due to writing a book about the operating titled The Mirror That Caught The Sun. Personally I enjoyed it, though I am not sure how enjoyable it would be to people that did not have at least some idea of the story it was based on. If you went in to it with no idea what it was about, it would probably not appeal or catch your interest, as you are likely to be confused.

If you do know the background, then it is an enjoyable and tense affair, leading you through the story well. It did feel a lot like a labour of love, rather than a Hollywood blockbuster, with an intent to tell the story, rather than water it down for the audience.
